FARM, GARDENfAND HOUSEHOLD, Srmilblr Farm Notes. A Missouri farmer, while admitting the value of other grasses and clover, thinks redtop is the best grass for sum' mer pasturage. He claims for it that it will stand drought better than blue grass, is well adapted to tenacious clay soils, nud will thrive on wet land better than most varieties. According to an Eugliah agricultural journal the potatoes which have proved most successful in the north of England are the Early Rose, Late Rose, and Vermont Beauty, all American varieties, and quite free from disease. An old experienced farmer once said toa new beginner in farming: " Young man, let me give you a little piece of ad vice, will you ? Never stir up your soil deeper than you are ablo to manure it." This is an axiom which is applicable in many ways. A harness kept soft and pliable with good neatsfoot oil will last almost a utetime. It is stronger, because slightly elastic, anil will seldom wear off the hair. The grafting of stone fruits, as the plum, cherry, peach, etc., should be done before that of the pip fruits, apples and Eears. The right time is just when the uds of the trees to be grafted arc swelling. It may bo done, however, when the foliage has appeared, if the grafts have been kept dormant. Botanists have long* known that the blight in grain is oocasioned by the growth of a minute parasitic fungus ou the leaves, stems, and glumes of the liv ing plant. Felice Foutana published in the year 1767 an elaborate account of this destructive pest so injurious to grain, and since that time modern botanists have given figures both of grain and grass affected by it, using high magnifying powers in their researches, which have been of much benefit to the farmer and the world at large. The presence of sorrel indicates acidity in the soil. A clean snmmer fallow with frequent plowing is a good way to eradicate it. Lime and salt is a good application. esneciallv wh?r? fVi? woqiiinm. from salt works can be cheaply procured. Slake the lime with a strong solution of this salt, and apply twenty to thirty bushels to the acre in the spring. D. O. Fisk, of Shelbnrne, Mass., says he has kept Jcraeys for twenty years, and finds them all ho could desire, both as to milk and as to feeding qualities, or when for any reason they are past milking, or even as steers; that as regards keeping qualities of the butter, no butter will keep unless the buttermilk is all washed out and properly salted, and that Jersey butter is no exception to the rule. It is said that they test the vitality oi grass seeds in Northern Europe bj placing a quantity of them on a knifeblade and heating it over a lighted candle. The seeds which are alive will crackle, while the dead seeds will choi on the blade. Mule* a* Farm Team*. It was John Randolph, we believe, wli< said he would go a mile to kick a sheep Perhaps it was because wool was noi cotton. We have known men to go i less distance to b'" kicked by a mule, We don't blame the mule. A man luu no business fooling around somebody'i mule that has been abused until it hai come to regard every biped it sees, ex cepting always chickens and other birds, as vindictive enemies. Now, mules have some qualities in common with certaii men; they love their friends and hat< their enemies, and they?the mules? generally get the better of their enemia UAAUAI* la^eu The fact is, moles ore just as yor make them. They will do anything ii reason for the master who treats then kindly, and everything unreasonnbh they can to those who abuse them. Ai form teams, anywhere south of the lati tude of forty-three degrees, they will dt more work than horses, and do it fa] . easier for their driver. They do not re quire so much care ; they subsist 01 less food ; are steadier at the plow and, as cultivators of the great staple ol the West, corn, require almost no driv iug when once they have learned wliai you want. Their only real disability in the Nortl is that they are susceptible to extremt cold, and are permanently injured there by. This is easily obviated by giving them warm shelter in the stable, ani: clothing when standing to the wagon, ex posed to the cold. But who ever saw a mule wilting nnde: the heat of the sun ? Turn a horse ou on a hot summer day and he will seel the shade. Give a mule his liberty, and ten to one, he will stretch himself ou on the south side of the barn, and enjo; liimself hugely. Abuse them, and the] will kick, if they have to wait ten year, to get the chance. Treat them humane ly, and they -will work kindly, and wil be perfectly innocent of mischief t< their master or his man. It is true the; are naturally mischievous ; that you can not break them of, and " what canno be cured must be endured."?Chicago Tribune. A Hint to All. It has been the practice among man; newspaper subscribers, after reading their paper, to mail it to some friend The new United States law now in effec makes the paper third-class matter, anc inflicts so high postal rates that it ii now cheapor and better for each persor who desires that liis friend should hav< the paper to subscribe for it directly al the office of publication, and have it sent from there. This will save all th< trouble of wrapping and mailing, anc the extra cost for postage, and the papei will be sent promptly. Send in you: orders for these papers and they will la sent at once, saving you trouble, time and expense.
