an incendiary, but to the ignition of some

Capt. Peoples has already made a fresh
start on the premises of a neighbor.
Judge Mackey ought certainly to be
read out of the party. Inhis report of the
trouble in Edgefield County, he uses the
following bold language;
No such iniquity a- the County government
of Edgefield has been inflicted upon
any portion of the English-speaking race
since the Saxon wore the iron collar of
the Nornaan. Tn that case, however, the
har.-h domi lation was that of a superior
civilization, which elevated while it
hastened. In this it is the reverse.
The Governor has since ordered the

now that peace and prosperity may
reign in that turbulent county.
lion N. B. Myers has resigned his seat
in the Legislature to run for the senatorship.
All good men will wish him success
in his fight against the ring, as the choice
of the old parly leaders is known to be
Green.
The Union Tlerald speaks of him as follows;
"We should deeply regret the loss of
Mr. Myers from the legislative councils at
this time were it not that he intends to
make the race for the senatorshin from his
county, soon to be made vacant by Robert
Smalls. Mr. Myers has been aD intelligent,
watchful and industrious representative,
and on more than one occasion ho hi>?
earned the gratitude of hia constituents
and the State by a bold opposition to bad
measures. We wish him success in. his
canvass."
The Court of General Sessions, Feb
term, Hon. J. J. Maher presiding convened
Monday at 4 p. m. The Grand
Jury was organized with Col. J. Glover
as foreman.
The case of the State vs. A. E. Owens
for violation of the civil rights, was tried
and the jury by direction of the Court
brought in a verdict of not guilty. The
State failed to establish the case against
Owons, having been unable to prove that
he had on the 1st day of November, 1873,
a Tavern License?and therefore, was not
liable under the section of the law covered
by the indictment.
In the afternoon the case of the State
vs. Thomas Wright charged with murder,
was taken up.
We will give a full summary of the
proceedings of the Court next week.
Last Monday, fling. Watson, a teacher
on Hilton Head, came to Beaufort with
his certificate of pav* for two months,
and presented it to the treasurer.
Mr. Holmes declined to pay it as he
had no money in the office, although
there is a large fund to the credit of the
township. Watson called again yesterday
with no better success, lie says he
is going to wait for his money if it takes
all summer.
