The Northern through mail that has
been passing over the Port Royal R R.
has been taken away and given to the
Georgia Central K R. The reason given
is the inability of Mr. Branch's road to
make connections at Yetuassce.
In the Methodist Conference, noir in
gcssion ih Columbia, Rev. A. Middclton
reports the Port Royal district as prosperous.
Bi t new churches have been built,
nnd four others are being built. Franklin
Talbird has presented the Society a
fine church in Beaufort.
Dr. S. B. Thompson -has been appointed
by Gov. Chainberluin, Health Officer
of this port, a position formerly held by
him. It is presumed that he will now
keep within the fold, nnd eschew journalism,
as his removal was owing to his having
un opinion and daring to express it.
It is said t' e Go >rgia Railroad has refused
longer to make repairs for the Port
Royal R R. owing to the hills not being
monthly paid, and that repair shops are to
be put up at Port Royal. It is rumored
that the road has effected a loan of twohundred
thousand dollars, for the purpose
and to p ?y its Qoating debts. We have
not heard wether the money is planters
loan shin plasters or not.
Captain. Thaddeua Jones obtained a

pay his taxes in the Treasurer's office, hut
while there, having placed on the countei
about seventeen dollars of >>5k hard num.
ed money it was grabbed by some person
who immediately made off with his plan
dcr. The captain innocently, thinks h?
is the only one that has been robbed in th?
tax collectors office.
