Nelson of Beaufort, and Erastus Hubbard of Fort Royal, were drawn as jurors for the U. 8. Court which meets in Charleston April 1st. The Northern through mail that has been passing over the Port Royal R R. has been taken away and given to the Georgia Central K R. The reason given is the inability of Mr. Branch's road to make connections at Yetuassce. In the Methodist Conference, noir in gcssion ih Columbia, Rev. A. Middclton reports the Port Royal district as prosperous. Bi t new churches have been built, nnd four others are being built. Franklin Talbird has presented the Society a fine church in Beaufort. Dr. S. B. Thompson -has been appointed by Gov. Chainberluin, Health Officer of this port, a position formerly held by him. It is presumed that he will now keep within the fold, nnd eschew journalism, as his removal was owing to his having un opinion and daring to express it. It is said t' e Go >rgia Railroad has refused longer to make repairs for the Port Royal R R. owing to the hills not being monthly paid, and that repair shops are to be put up at Port Royal. It is rumored that the road has effected a loan of twohundred thousand dollars, for the purpose and to p ?y its Qoating debts. We have not heard wether the money is planters loan shin plasters or not. Captain. Thaddeua Jones obtained a County Check from the County Commissioners at their session on the 20th instant for building a bridge over Bees Creek; He then proceeded like, a good citizen to pay his taxes in the Treasurer's office, hut while there, having placed on the countei about seventeen dollars of >>5k hard num. ed money it was grabbed by some person who immediately made off with his plan dcr. The captain innocently, thinks h? is the only one that has been robbed in th? tax collectors office. A Project is on foot(to establish ai Port Hoyal aRai'road rolling stork Manufacturing Company. Myers gave no tier in the Legislature of a bill to incorporatt this company, and the projectors of th< enterprise nre said to be heavy capitalist! who have subscribed half a million of dollars lbr this venture. A large number o] operatives with their families are to- bt sent, down ut once and it is expected that wrthin the next two month9active opera tions will commence in erecting the necessary buildings. The parade and inspection of the Fire Dcpaitnient came off on Wednesday last, and was a very creditable affair. Tht playing by the Hand Engine was una* ually good, but that of the Steamei showed a lack of ability on the part ol engineer to handle hrs engine. The department proved to bo iu bcttei working order than ever b?. fore. The Washington Ho. 2. took the opportunity while out of getting their picture t ikei. with the steamer. Intelligence was recived here Saturday morning of the loss off Barnegat of the st eamship Mediator from liew York to Port Royal. The loss to Beaufort merchants by the Mediator was slight owing to insurance. The Standard were the heaviest loser wt hear of having an uninsured bill of stationary valued at $200 and their Oubsidcs! E. A. and F. W. Scbeper also lose eighty dollars. This office suffered to the extent of half a dozen font* of type. Among those having goods on board nsured were John Franz G. Waterhouse F. W. Scln per It. G. Holmes and W. M. French amount ing altogether to several thousand do! lars. The following named persona are in the Beaufort County jail, charged with felonies nnd awaiting trial at the February term of the Court of General Sessions : Elisha -Mkins, mnrder; Scipio Bryan, murder; Painter Chisohn, murder and arson ; om Sight, murder; Abram Maxwell, murder; Bella Kittle, assault with intent to kill; Nelson Patterson, same; ltosa Bhepard, same; Thomas Davis, burglary and grand larceny. Four p rs .n-i charged with murder are at laige by viriue of the habeas corpus, and one charged with assault with intent to kill, ow*n his present freedom to the p >tent influence of the * one writ.
