If plenty Qf marsh hay or leaves art
at hand, it is well to oovar a quantity ol
parsnips and salsify, so that they can be
dug from time to tune as wanted ; the]
are much better than poorly kept ones.
To keep roots properly in the cellar
they should be stored in earth, and if tht
house cellar is used, secure ample venti
lation.
It is better to oover with leaves al!
beds of spinach which are to be left foi
next spring's use, except where the winters
are mild.
Bean-poles should be properly cared
lor xinder cover. When sheltered thej
will lust for several seasons, and if ol
oak, walnut, or red cedar, they will
easily last for a dozen years. Pea-brush
usually has to be renewed every season.
If there is no snow on the ground, al]
weeds, brush, and rubbish in general,
may be cleared up and burned, and the
ashes spread or saved until next spring.
Thrash out and clean all seeds that remain
mi cared for, and label with date
and name of variety. Keep in a coo]
place where there is no danger from
mice.
Trenches or pits, where root3 are
stored, will not need covering until freoz
ing weather comes, and then only gradu
ally, just enough to keep out frost.
The: Fanrifr*' Foe.
There is a discussion, says an exchange,
as to what or who are the "real foes oi
the farmers." This discussion does no!
seem, as yet, to have evolved the truth,
at least not the whole of it. One of the
chief and real foes of the farmer is him
self?is his lack of knowledge of busi
ness, not simply the business of producing
crops, but of the commercial busi
noes involved in the disposol of them.
Another is his apparent willingness tc
run in debt?to extend the area of liii
domain beyond the scope of his capita
to purchase and pay for and render productive
what he purchases. These twc
foes to his progress are so real, so radi
cal, so closely at the bottom of all hii
troubles, that if he will concentrate liii
efforts to overcome them, the other foe<
will retreat.

A NEW FINANCIAL IOLICY.
i The Bill Anted I'pen by the It (-publican Senatorlnl
Cuom.
I The finance bill, agreed to by the U.
S. Senate Republican caucus, and re.
ported to the Senate, in its leading fea,!
tures is substantially as follows:
[ First?Free banking to be open to all
L individuals and associations, without
limitation of capital.
Seoond? The retiring of an amount of
' i greenbacks equal to eighty per oent. of
the amount of new national notes issued,
until the greenback circulation shall be
reduced to $300,000,000, after which no
further reduction of the greenbacks is to
take place. It is claimed that by this
'. provision there will be neither expansion
f nor contraction of the currency, as
^ about twenty per oent. is now required
1 as bank reserves.
* Third?The withdrawal and destruction
of the fractional currency and the
substitution of silver coin, the arrangement
to apo into effect as soon as practicable
unaer the diroction oi the Secretary
' of the Treasury, who is authorized to use
* the surplus money for supplying the sil|
ver coin, and if this is not sufficient to
sell the requisite amount of bonds of the
new series to obtain the funds for that
* purpose.
Fourth?Removing the ooet for the
1 coinage of gold at the several mints.
} Fifth?Tne resumption of specie pay5
ments to begin on Jan. 1, 1879.
The Secretary is authorized to use the
surplus specie in the Treasury, but if
that is not sufficient, to sell bonds in
' order to obtain gold to pay the Treasury
f notes. But the last provision does not,
1 like the others, go into immediate effect.
5 The Legal Tender act remains undis1
turbed.
7 The bill having been argeed to almost
3 unanimously by the caucus, there being
7 only four members dissenting, insures its
} passage by the Senate, and it is thought
by Senators that it will pass the House
5 of Representatives by a respectable
r! jority. No doubt is entertained that it
" , will receive the approval of the Presi*
dent, as it is in accordance with his re3
rent recommendation to Congress.
3 It is said that bo much of the fractional
1 currency is mutilated and lost, as much
1 as four per cent, annually, that silver can
t$ko its place with no in convenience to
the public. The government is able to
purchase and coin silver at a profit, and
can at an early period effect the substitu
I The bill is in accordance with the
} views of the Secretary of the Treasury

I expressed doubts of the expediency of

1 i of specie payments, the manufacture of
i; a large quantity of silver coin to take the
) I place of the fractional notes, beginning
3 with the smallest denomination and gradI
uallv withdrawing the notes.
The Secretary says the estimate of the
3 Director of the Miitt shows a gain in the
specie and bullion in the last two fiscal
\ i years of about $38,000,000, and the
. | stock of specie in the country to be about
t : $166,000,000. The estimated increase of
' ; ooin and bullion is gratifying as being
'r J one of the evidences of a gradual recupei

tion of specie payments to be undertaken
11 and maintained.

mills use wheat straw for fuel, instead of

J When a man discovers a great truth, it

Tweed's Prison Life.
The warden of the prison in which
Wm. M. Tweed is oonnned says, in reply
to charges that he had taken Tweed
to his own noose against prison rales :
About 7 p. m. , or lust previous to my
leaving the prison for the night, I visited
him, as I always made a practice of doing,
before leaving for my house. I
found him very much excited and complaining,
saving that the room was too
close?that he could not get air enough
?constantly walking the floor, and telling
mo that ho might as well be dead as
alive.
I talked with him a short time and left
him. Fearing the possibility of an
appopletic stroke, as often indicated to
me by a former chief of staff, under a
certain state of excitement and want of
sufficient air, and for the circulation and
driving the blood from the head, I
particularly directed the liallkeeper, Mr.
McDonald, prior to Mr. Tweed's retiring
for the night, to walk him from the
prison to my house, as I wished to sec
what change, if any, tliis walk had produced.
On Mr. Tweed's reaching the
house with the keeper I found him so
much exhausted and so weak I asked
him to oome into the kitchen, where ho
had a cup of tea and some toast. I take
this opportunity to state that it is almost
a daily occurrence that prisoners work:
u A At. - ii ....

my house, becoming sick or exhausted,
are often taken into my kitchen and there
refreshed by taking a cup of tea and
other nourishment. Common humanity
dictates that to me; besides, I feel the
responsibility of guarding their health,
as well as their safe custody.
An Earnest Appear.?The editor of

to the better nature of his delinquent

Indisputable Evidence.
8t. Elmo, HL, July 8, 1874.
R. V. Pieroe, M. D., Buffalo, N. Y.:?I wish
to add my testimony to the wonderful curative
properties of your Alt. Ext., or Golden Medical
Discovery. I have taken great interest in this
medicine since I flmt used it. I was badly
afflicted with dyspepsia, liver deranged and ah
almost perfect prostration of the nervous system.
So rapid and oomplete did the discovery
effect a perfect cure that it seemed more like
magio and a perfect wonder to myself, and
since that time we have never been witnout
a bottle of the discovery and Purgative Pellets
in the house. They are a solid, sound family
physician in the house and ready at all times to
fly to the relief of sickness?without chargo.
We have never had a doctor in the house since
we first began, the use of your pellets and
disoovery. 1 have recommended the use of
these medicines in several severe and oompli|
cated cases arisirur from, as T thnncriif. ?n
impure state of tfie blood, and in no ono case
have they failed to more than aooompliBh all
they are claimed to do. I will only mention
one as remarkable (though I could give yon
dozens). Henry Koeter, furniture dealer, of
this place, who was one of the most pitiful
objects ever seen, bis face swollen out of shape,
scales and eruptions without end, extending to
the body, which was completely covered with
blotches and scales. Nothing that he took
seemed to efTect it a particle. I finally induced
him to try a few bottles of the Golden Medical
Discovery, with daily use of the pellets, assuring
him that it would surely cure him. He
commenced its use some six weeks since, taking
two pellets each night for a week, then one
each night, and the discovery as directed. The
result is, to-day his skin is perfectly smooth,
and the scaly eruptions are gone. He has
taken some seven or eight bottles in all, and
considers himself eared. This case has bailed
the skill of our beet physicians. Messrs. Dunford
A Co., druggists, of this plaoe, are selling
largely of your medicines and the demand
steadily increases, and they give perfect satisfaction
in every ease, lteepoctfully,
W. H. CjUjtPLHf, Agt. Am. Exp. Co.

why not ? They are the best family physic, besides
being the greatest anti-bilious remedy
