I'OKT BOVAL AM) THE INTERIOR. '
Unless Port Koyul means to content i
herself with a mere trade within State t
limits and not oven commanding all of t
that, she will pat forth the utmost txer- l
tions to throw off the restrictions patron- (
izingly imposed upon her by the Georgia 1
Wail ltoad, and strikeout an independent
course for herself. The first thing aud
most imperative is to push a railroad
through Edgefield County, and lower
edge of Abbeville crossing the Georgia
Rail Road at Greenwood or "Ninity6ix
" continuing in Air Lino for Abbeville
via Spartanburg C. H. 'that would insure c
a continental communication at once and 1
oilers such competition with the South r
Carolina R. R. as would effectually pro- 1
vent disturbance by any future rivalryTho
nextfthing is to connect Alillcn on the
Central Rail Road with somo point on our
grand leading stem to tha ocean. "ihe

Road, whose terminus will neccessarily
' be at Port Royal, hut our concern should
be to insist upon its being so pushed into *the
very beart of the Great Wpst as to be
reached by their truuk lines. The great *
corn basin of the west demands an outlet 11
at the least cost and with the slightest
obstruction. ,Port Royal bas^clear a?Jvan
tages in her band which any of her nvalt
may reasonably covet her. Business in-,
variably goes where it is burdened with j
the least tribute, and it is cheap transportation
that is the key to that city's commercial
prosperity whicb'canjoffer it. It
is trne that the trade of the vast interior
is to be ample in the future to feed the
prosperity of a whole line of Atlantic
ports, but it is of great importance that
this one of ours should make haste to _
-establish the commercial rank which it
intends to maintain. The reciprocal
advantages which out port will be-tow ^
f/1 fho wwtll 1?. x? m
? nm ue mil ana appreciated
by the influx ot foreign population
which o it steamships can bring .to settle
up the waste places of the State, by the
enterprise it will infuse in new hrauchva
of industry by cheap rates of freight un- '
heard of heretofore, and by enlarging the
valuation of property by brthging it into
market by new settlers. Combination of
capital) and carriage ai? not wanting in a
community so compacted as this. J
Every indication points to the attainment
of a crop of over 4,000,000 bales of ^
cotton. The recent firmness and activity
in the market is doubtless dao to speculative
combination. Immense quantities
of the staple are still in the interior, and ,
the crop is said to bo the best and best
bundled since the war, owibg to the favorable
fail for gathering that bos prevailed _
all over the cotton belt. The best bales
of the present crop are still In tbn h?n<ia
of the producers. Even at present prices
the crop nets the South $2,500,000- 11
000.

The result of the meeting of railroad
Presidents and officials that rastirt Macon
last week, was an agreement to pool the fr
business seeking outlet from the three sea ?
ports of Savannah Port Royal and Charles- b;
ton. By this arrangement the advantages
of Port Royal, ere placed upon an equal footing
with other heretofore discriminated
routes and the business will be distri
buted among them uponthe basis of a per
cent ago done by eacli np to the 1st ot

The GreeoVillO and Columbia Rail ^
Road due to the admirable and skillful
management of Col. Dodamead, is becoming
one of the most KH#ble avenues
of trade and travpl in the state. We
should regret to see the retirement of
Col. Dodsmead which we have heard J
was bis determination. Never hss the

his loss woald be felt severely unless to
transplant him to some other of out o
roads needing thorough re-organization.

Presidency of the Port Royal Rail Road!
Salary should be no object in order to A
secure a railroad uian to direct this enterprise.
