C. H. Wright haa been appointed U. S.
Commissioner by the U. 8. Court in Columbia.
Our town authorities hare leaaed the
old express building to be used as an engine
house and for town offices.
We regret to be obliged to record the
fact that Mr. A. S. Davenport was thrown
from the express wagon on Tuesday last,
and sustained somewhat serious injuries.

now open for the receipt of taxes. Some
few hare paid, but the menej comes in
slowly.
The Governor says Tic cannot extend
the time, but he will recommend that
taxes be paid in two install rneots hereafter
in January and April. The only way is
to pay up at once and save costs.
Tcxkiti.?The holidays are approaching
and many of our citizens are laying by a
stock of poultry. The trouble is with
too many that they do not let the owners
know when they secure their Christmas
supply. We have heard of quite a number
of turkeys being fastened upon without
the owners knowledge, one man having
oecu relieved of six, and others to a
smaller extent.

Burglars.?The cold weather teems to
stimulate to action that portion of our
community that live by thieving. Last
Friday night Mr. Kncchtli's house wa*
entered and after being thoroughly overhauled,
the thieves secured about twentyfive
dollars worth of clothing, and silent
ly stole away.
Saturday night while Mr. Smith was
in his store his room was entered. The
lock of the door was broken to gain entrance
to the sleeping room?, the beds
were upset, several trunks broken open
and after a vain search for money the
thieves left with hut little plunder.
We cengratulate the County Commissioners
and the traveling public upon
the completion ef a fine bridge ever Belt
Water Creek.
, This structure has been erected by
Messrs. W. B. Davis A Bon of St. Helena
Island, at a a cost ef $871, and is in striking
contrast to. the miserable affair which
was puf up in ths year 1871, at aa outlay
of $710. In this connection we desire to
csll the attention of all whom it may concern
to the fact that the second crossing
of the rail road over the Shell road is at
present insufficiently provided with
planks to enable vsliicles to cross the
track. A county bridge just beyond also
requires immediate attention.

A brutal murder was committed on
8t Helena Island last Wednesday. The
victim was March Lcgsrt a young man in
the employ of J. R. McDonald. On the
morning of the murder Mr. McDonald
gave Legare $43 to buy cotton. The deceased
went to Lands End with an ox
cart and purchased eight bags of cotton,
leaving fifteen dollars in his pocket, and
was on his way :back to hia employer
when at about 1 p. m. he was fired upon
and no doubt instantly killed. The murderer
searched his victim, secured the
$15 and dragged the body by the feet out
of the road and laid it on the grae*. He
then led the ox some distance from the
road and took one bag of cotton from
the cart carried it to a ditch and covered
it over with bashes.
Two hours later a little Jgirl named
Alice Howard discovered the body and
gave the alarm, when the neiarhKn*
turned out and after scarring discovered
the cart and bag of concealed cotton.
Upon examining the body it wm discovered
that he had been allot in the back
of his head, the charge passing through
and breaking tba frontal bona. '1 he hair
where the charge bad entered was found
to be singed so that the gun must have
been very close to bis head when fired.
Circumstances seemed to point very
strongly to 8cipio Bryan, who was seen
by several persons along the road at about
the same time with a gun, and the Coro
nrr's verdict fonnd him guilty of the
k murde^ A warrant was issued by the
Coroner and Bryan was arrested and
lodged in jail.
Under what is known as th^'Windsor
Report " made at the last session of the
Congress of the United States several
rail road surreys were ordered and a
corps of engineer* are now on their war
from some point on the Tenneeaee rirer
to Clayton, On., thence to Andereon C. H.
A. C., nod mott probably to Augusta, Oa.,
which would be the moat direct line to
reach the harbor of Port Boyal. The
rail road from Tocoa to Kibertoo, Oa. is
now in process of construction under
the energetic direction of l>r. Doyle, bar
ing for ifs objective point some already
rstablished communication with the deep
water of I'ort Itoyal.
Kvcrv enterprise is tending towards
s- our harbor, and its national importance
is > joining to la- re vgi.i/.ed through thef

abolished, and also bo the custodian of the
town moneys.
The funds are to paid out on the order
of the Committee on Finance. The books
are to be opened for the inspection of al'
tax payers, and any one can be able to
ascertain how the funds hold out. The
Treasurer is elected for one year and
fires bonds for three thousand dollars.
The only change we could suggest
would be, that the order on the treasurer
should be countersigned by the Intendant,
both as a measure of security and a
recognition of the superior officer of the
town.
O. W. Roberts was unanimously elected
treasurer and from his experience of two
years as tax collector is well qualified to
fulfill the duties devolved upon him.

issued by the Planters Loan and Barings
Bank of Augusta, have had inserted
on thsir facs " one day after sight.'' Is
the bank weakening that they reserve
three days grace t It is about time to
stop the circulation of this stuff; the merchants
hare been obliged to receive it as
I ihe Port Roval Railroad has had no
other cnriyncy, and the hands were
obliged to take it for wages.

In a recent sermon Mr. Beecher took
advanced ground upon the Bnnday question,
defending the right of persons to observe
the day in any manner they choose.
He remarkd that it is the best thing
ahoht folks sometimes that they don't
want to go to church. When they make
believe to like it, when things are read
that they doat care anything about, said
in a way that don't have any influence on
them, they go from conventional reasons.
If, he says, those who are prosperous and
living at their ease make Sunday a day of
rigor for the lese favored citlrens af the
Commonwealth, make it a day of easement
and relaxation, hot a dav on which
the belt is tackled up many holes tighter,
on which thej are leas marten of themselves,
and the poor are oppressed there
by, it will work its abolition.

the annoying and prolonged delay at
Tetnassee.
And those offering to ship cotton on the
line are so frequently disappointed that

river and so transported to market.
Meeting of the Town Conncll.
The town Council at their last meeting
passed an ordinance that was much
needed in justice to the tax payers of our
town.
It provides frr the election of a town
treasurer, who shall perform all the duties
