Heavy.?Last W ednesday a colored man named Lawton put his foot under one of the Iiodgers presses at Port Royal, and lost a few toes. He is satisfied that the pressure is considerable to the foot, if not to the inch. T)KN ItO HWAMP. ^ Great excitement prevails in the neigh "borhood of New Riverjowing to a skull being found supposed to be human, and that of a colored man, who disappeared ubout two years ago. The' colored people had an intimation that the missing man had been murdered,in Dcnbo Swamp and they came together fur the purpose of having a grand and thorough search. After securing a score of Possums several deer and other game, they halted for lunch, and happeningj to remember the object of the gathering they set out again, when lo 1 and behold they discovered some grass too green for ordinary growth and only from some unnatural and illegal source could such freshness emanate. The horns were sounded the clans gathered and one morcbold than the rest removed the covering and laid bare some bones that were unanimously voted to be human. The remains were secured and carried ^ away to be more thoroughly examined. Coroner Muckcn\fuss was sent for to hold an inquest but owing to illness was unable attend. They sent for Trial Justice Mulliimn who dn to act, auu as Trial Justivo J. Douglas Robertson is in Columbia, they ?. were obliged to post all the way to Beaufort for a coroner. In the mean time the skull has disappeared and confusion prevails in Penbo Swamp. However it is asserted that an inquest will be held next Friday, and an etlort wi'l be made to resurrect the [remains of tho supposed victim of violence. * Charleston "Vlit Port Royn 1 The Steamship Calvert from Baltimore * irrived as Port Royal Monday with a general cargo. Among her freight was S00 boxes bacon for Charleston. Mr. Enslow is a young man of great experience in brokerage and shipping and the faculties of one as thoroughly acquainted with all the details and intricacies of the business, has long been a desideratum among the ship masters doing business there. The house who have been so fortunate in securing his services could not hare selected the services of one more popular with masters and owners and one morequaiified to fill the position of chief clerk in their extensive business. tu We understand that Mr. A. Ashley Chrietzbergj a member of Washington Lodge No. 1. I. O. .O. T. has succeeded in obtaining the siguature3, and co-opcration of several of our prominent citizens lor trie purpose ol establishing a Lodge of good templars in our town. INLAND ItOUTE TO CHINA. R. F. Fleming Supt. of the Port Royal Railroad must be a thorough going fellow tfhd evidently intends "to put things through." His advertisement for pile driving for the new Railroad wharf extension in which he requires a hammer of not less than twenty thousand pounds is to say the least Uunning. If the hammer goes through we will have the shortest and most direct route to China via the infernal regions. The Rev. E. T. Walker an aged and respected minister of the gospel and rector of Trinity Episcopal church at Edgefield C. H. lias been arrested and dragged from bis home by federal officers, to answer an indictment, for violation of the enforcement Act. Mr. Walker was formerly a resident of Beaufort, widely in ! r pute and worthy of the universal ! esteem, with which he'was regarded. His | character position and training are proof ' against the substantiation of so outrageous a slander, ^wliich according to evidence supported by affidavits of most respectable citizens of Edgefield County, have no doubt been trumped up by a colored m?u of bad repute in a spirit of infamous malevolenco.
