Diabolical Murder.

iedotions. This, we understand, was
contrary to the order of the commander
of the district.
Mrs Price, accompained by her ncice,
started to Jacksonville to make com
plaints, and the white officers iu command
tOf the negro pickets, allowed them tc
^brutally triurdcr her. -Her body was
found buried, and it contained a number
of bayonet thrusts.? Ucr.neicc ha?
not been heard from, and >t is-presunad
that her fate was the same. It seems tc
iw that it is full time that rctaliaforj
'measures were fully inaugurated, foi
? tamely submitting to such brutirlity,
seems only to enrage and encourage the
enemy. ? We have tried submission sufficiently
"to satisfy any sane person, thai
it is poor policy.?Gainesville (Fia.) Cotton

A Heavy Wager.
The San Francisco Alia Californian
^ives the following account of a strangely
constituted wager. About ten months
* " since two gentlemen of that city agreed
to tiic following condition:
If tlie Federal forces did not capture
Richmond within thirty dajs from that
date, he was to give his opponent a
single sound eatable apple; if Richmond
: held out sixty, he was to rjivc him two
*3jr apples, and so op, doubling the number
for each month until Richmond was
-'4 . taken to the end of time, if that event
did not occur before, nine mouths have
passed since the first apple was handed
over, and the list of apples delivered at
the end of the successive months is as
follows: 1 2, 4, 8, 1C, 82, 64, 128,256,
total, 511.
Thus far it is all a good joke, and the
loser has paid forfeits regulalarly with a
good grace; but yesterday it ruined a
$10 piece to meet the demand ("apples
are 15 to 20 cents per pound, and it took
a fifty pound box.) Should Richmond
be taken within the present month he
would get bark nil of the apples he has
lost and one'niore, which as the price
will then be at the very highest notch,

should it bold out a year longer, and he
continue to pay his losses," his last pay.
nicnt would cost fiim $40,950, and lie
would he ?81,000 out; in three mouths
more he would be out ?686,310; and
should the war last from this date as
much longer as it has already lasted since
the commencement,4m nation on either
should begiu to meet -the terms of the
wager, even allowing it to be reduced to
a cash basis, and the payment t > be made
in greenbacks.

War Tax Office,
i . Columbia, July 29, 18G4.
1 It becomes necessary for me to state
' to tbe tax officers of this State, and to all
tux payers, that this office will not pro
ceed with the assessment of the* advai
loretn tax until the provisions of the Acts
' of Congress and the plau of taking the j
tax can be fully digested I cannot con- i
i sent to harass the tax-payers until we are
able to move smoothly along with the
1 work. The late amendments to the Act1
? of 17th of February 18G4. have render- j
i ?ed all previous plans and papers pre par- i
ed for taking the taxes-in June entirely I
> Worthless. The sca.rcity of paper and 1
' the difficulty of having printing done :
? makes a delay absolutely necessary. It!
is extremely difficult, under any circumstances,
to put the taxes imposed by Con?
gress into any shape by which they can
t be understood by the tax officers. When
the best manner of taking the taxes has j
- Decn put upon paper, l will issue a circular
explaining the Acts ami the books |
and until this can be done, it will be hut
idle to attempt to proceed.
As the Commissioner of Taxes will ;
endeavor to economize by making the j
sheets heretofore issued, headed, "He- \
turns and assessments on Property,Mi>n- !
eys and credits, &c.," answer for some j
of the returns, and inasmuch as in some
of the Districts the sheets sent to them
have been disfigured by returns taken in i
June upon them, the Assessors will itn- '
; mediately report to this office how many j
J leaves have been thus disfigured, in order
j that I may apply for new sheets and
have them forwarded as soon as received.
Jos. Daniel Pope,
State Collector.
Some fifteen of the Yankee brutes went j
to the house of Dr. Car.r, who resided j
near Coosaville, Ga. His family were j
very much afflicted at tlie time. One of!
his son's children was laying a corpse 1
in the house, and one of the Doctor's 1 1
children was then dying. The fiends]
went into the house and drove out the j
Doctor and his wife, against which they j
remonstrated, telling them that their
child was dying, but this did not reach !
tic hearts of the demons; they had to '
leave the house, winch was soou rifled j
of all its valuables, during which time
the child died. When they had seen rod :
x their plunder, they came to the door and i
told the Doctor he might enter the house
?that his child was dead and in hell, !
where they hoped lie soon would be.

The Kearsnrgc is again at s??:i, wait- '

learn that the Sacramento, a line screw
sloop of thirty.two guns, h is arrived at
Lisbon, bound to the English Clin tin*] ;
and it is ii"t at all unlikely that the Iroquois
