, >11 Concerning Large Armies. J The following facts, culled from the field of ancient history, mav be of some interest at the ri present tunc : ] The city of Thebes had a hundred gates and tin could send out at each gate 10,000 and 200 ^J.1 chariots. * nu The army of Teran, King of Ethiopia, con- Cc sisted of 1,000,000 men, 24,000 cavalry and 27 scythe-armed chariots?1481 B.C. Uamihar went from Carthage and landed at Palermo. Ho had a fleet of 2,000 ships and 8,000 small vessels, and a land force of 200,000 men. At the battle in which he was de- oa fcated 150,000 were killed. A Roman fleet, led by Regulus against Car- otl thage, consisted of 830 vessels, with 140,000 clJ men. The Carthagenian fleet numbered 330 Oa vessels, with 100,000 men. ^ At tho battle of CanniD there wore ot the pl< Romans, including allies, 80,000 foot and 6,000 horse ; of the Carthagcnians 40,000 foot and 10,000 horse. Of these 7??,000 were slain in nil and 10,000 taken prisoner*. bn Hannibal, during the campaign in Italy and Spain, plundered 400 towns and destroyed 3,- ms 000,000 nien. ?ln ? . tiv Ninns, the Assyrian Ki"?r, about 1200 years 1>. C.,led against the Hadrians his army conlisting of 1,500,000 foot, 200,000 horse and 10,000 chariots armed with scythes. Italy, a little before Hannibal's tinm, was able to send into the field 100,000 men. "t Sennacherib lost, in a single night 18\000 ,j0 men by the destroying angel?Kings xix le< 15, 37. Scmiramis employed 3,000,000 men in building the mighty Babylon. She took 100,000 ^ Indian prisoners at the Indus and 1,000 boats. A short time after the taking of Babylon, ju the forces of Cyrus consisted of 600,000 foot, 120,000 horses and 2,000 chariots armed with J scythes. ap An army of Cnmbyc ?, 9'\000 strong, was in buried in the desert sand of Africa by a South wind. sli ?#? D; Dangerous. Ni The liquor now sold to drink by manv dealers, is said to be very fatal in its effects. Almost daily we heard of some old toper being laid low from its effects. Yet, strange to say, men will seek it and drink it, despite the war" nings 6taring them in the face. It is stated a... i: i...: * tnat imjuui is uuiiijj; iiiaiiuiautiii t*u in ui uj; 0j' stores, in this city, and sold for "genuine Old Bourbon." The Whiskey Irysipelas.?The scarcity of ? of liquor of all kinds in this State, has started 1 up as arrant a race of rogues as every breathed, They doctor whiskey. They make whiskey T out of apple brandy, and French brandy out NV of whiskey, all sorts of brandies and wines out p] of ingenious concoctions of all three. The whibkev?that is to say, the most ot it, is not ,, composed of but about thirty per cent, of gen- * | nine alcohol, and the rest is made up with wa- . ter, vitriol, and coloring matter. An. old and ^ } \ mellow taste is secured by adding the raw t( flesh of wild game, or young veal, or lamb^ p' which, after soaking for three or four weeks, imparts to the liquor a rich, soft taste. The <>l other liquors are done up in a similar way. This stuff, if drank to exec**, brings on irysipe- las ami other diseases of the skin and flesh and will result in death. There is coinpara- n lively little good liquor of any kind in town.? Richmond Enquirer. Matkimony vh. Single-Blessedness.? Matrimony is : Hot buckwheat cakes, soft beds, rcomfortable sbnpers, smoking coffee, red lips, i round arms, kind words, shirts exulting in but- p tons, redeemed stockings, bootjacks, happiness, \ etc. Hurrah! IIow many people there are in the South, who have an abundance of Artemus ^ Ward sort of production. Artemns Ward ' nt says: I have already given two cousins to the war and stand reddy to sacrifficc my wife's brother ratliur'n not see the rebelyn xriisht.
