Soldier Wit.?Colonel , of the th
Alabama Regiment, was famous for having everybody
done up in military style. Once, while
field officer of the day, and going his tonr of
inspection, he came on a sentinel from the lltli
Mississippi Regiment sitting flat down on his
post, with his gun taken entirely to pieces^
when the following dialogue took place;
. MI-on*t yon know that a sentinel, while on
duty, should always keep on his feet?"
Sentinel?(without looking up), "That's the
"way we used to do when the war first began
but that's played out long 'go."
Colonel?(beginning to doubt if the man was
on duty), "Are you the sentinel here?"
Sentinel?Well, I'm a sort of a sentinel."
Colonel?."Well, I'm a sort of an officer of
tlic day."
Sentinel?"Well, if you'll hold on till I sort
'of git ray gun together, I'll give you a sort of
salute."
Colonel off to hunt an easier case.

The following lines were penned by Lieut. C. B.
Hums, commanding Company 4-D," 15th Regiments.

Youn son, RKDIN PARBLKR, died at hospital, in
Gordonsville, in Virginia, on the 29th of July last.?
There is one thing I can say in trnth, for the gratification
of the loved ones at home?the Confederacy
had no better soldier under arras thau Redin was. I o
everything respecting his duty as a soldier, he was
willing and obedient?enduring all fatigue, hardships
nnd exposute without murmuring. In time of battle
ho was always sit his post, and never was known to
shrink from any portion of danger. In fact, he was
everything thafcould be desired, in these times, when
we need good and true men. Thus has passed awsiy
one that all loved for his many good qualities; and at
the same time, let me assure you that we, as a company,
deeply sympathise with you in this your time
of trouble, and hope your loss mav be his gaiu.

any time previous to the 1st of September, 1862.?
This section, however, is uot intended to include any
officers or men captured at Vicksburg, July 5th, 1863i
except such as were declared exchanged by Exchange
Notice No. 6, Sept. 12th, 1863, or are specially named
in this notice. But it does embrace all deliveries
made at City Point or other places before Sept. 1st,
1863, and with the limitation above named, all cap.
tures at Port Hudson, or any other place whero the
parties were released or paroled.
1. The Staff of Generals Pemborton, Stevenson

Bowen, Moore, Barton, S. D. Lee, Cummings, Harris
and Baldwin, and of Colouels Reynolds, Cockrell and

of tho Confederate States, who, during the existing
war, have died in battle, or who have died of disease,
contracted either by wounds or exposnro, or who, not
being sons of officers or soldiers, aro under the age of
twenty years, and have behaved with gallantry on tho
field of battle, who shall be placed in one or other of the
Military Institutions of thiB State, to be educated at
the charge of a grateful country."
