CIRCULAR AND APPEAL.
FREE MARKET OF CHARLESTON.
"fit the Citixen* of Charleston and the People of Souti
Carolina generally, and to the Farmers and Vlanter
especially, from the mountains to Uit seaboard
Tin.* Five Market of Charleston, otio of tho nobles
and most useful charities extant, after inure than i
twelve month of successful operation, i.s in danger o
suspension and oven linat stoppage. It is an insthu
tion, founded by private patriotism and benevolence
endorsed by the city authorities of Charleston, nn<
, recognized and encouraged by the Legislature of tin
St;itc. Its groat and highly useful purposes is to sup
ply provisions, free of expense, to llie needy linmlias o
soldiers und seamen, lighting tho battles ol their eoun
try, or dead in her service; and upward of eight linn
tired families depend on ilsbounty IbrtK'ir daily bread
It has become a great public necessity, .-qui it is (lit
duty of every christian and patriot, male an J female
rich and poor, young and old, to contribute to its sup
.port, in proportion to moans and ability?the rich mat
out of lus wealth, the poor man out of his poverty
the widow with her mite?every large stream shouW
pour, every little rill trickle its refreshing waters int<
this great reservoir, of patriotic benevolence, to Im
dispensed in Cod-blessed bounty to the wives ui.t
children, the widows and orphans, the sisters and otli
er female dependents, of our brave soldiery and sou
men. The final stoppage, or even the suspension, o
this charity would be one of the direst calamities ilia
could befall our City and State?it would inlliet dis
tress, suffering, and even starvation on numbers now
comfortably fed by its bounty, and perhaps, load t.(
bread-riots, in our conservative city, to her serious in
jury and deep disgrace. Come, tnen, fellow citizens
to the rescue, promptly, liberally, efficiently, and no
only Rave tho Free Market from destruction or suspension.
but 8ustuiu it, in healthful vigor, as a Cod bless
ed-and man-blcssing institution, hot donations ir
money and in kind pour in lavishly from every qunr
tor of tho City and .State; and the consequences wil
be happy indeed. Not only will bread, and meal, am
meat bo sustainingly furnished to soldiers and sea
men's families, but the heart of tho warrior will bt
cheered and his arm nerved to victorious batilo against
tho vandal and ruthless foe, by tho comforting conviction
that his wife and little ones are patriotically ami
sufficiently cared for, by their follow citizens, at home.
Let our farmers and planters especially, in every sec
lion 01 tuo filutc, Hcntl liberal supplies of vegetables
and provisions, Irom tlicir gardens, tlioir lields, tlieii
bums and their smoke houses; and swell to overflowing
the great reservoir of Free Market charity.
Charity is twice blessed?it blesseth him that gives
as well as liini that receives?and blesses the givor
even more than the receiver
Come up, then, one and all, to the hallowed work,
and uot only earn the soldier's and seamen's undying
gratitude, but lay up treasure in Heaven, where neither
inotli nor rust doth corrupt, nor thieves break in
and steal.
