FREE MARKET OF CHARLESTON.
To the CitLecns of Charleston and the People of South
Carolina generally, and to the Partners and Planters
especially, from the mountains to the seaboard
Tlio Free Market of Charleston, one of the noblest
ind most useful charities extant, after more than a
twelve month of successful operation, is in danger of
suspension and even linal stoppage. It is an institution,
founded by private patriotism and benevolence,
endorsed by the city authorities of Charleston, and
recognized and encouraged by the Legislature of tho
State. Its great and highly useful purposes is to supply
provisions, free of expense, to the needy funiilias of
soldiers and seamen, fighting the batt'es oi their country,
or dead in her service; and upward Of eight hundred
families depo.iu on its bounty for their daily bread.
It has become a great public necessity, and it is tlio
duty of evety christian and patriot, male and female,
rich and poor, young and old, to contribute to its support.
in pioportion to intans and ability?tlio rich man
out of Ins wealth, the poor man out of his poverty,
llie widow with her mite?every large stream should
pour, every lit le rill trickle its refreshing waters into
lids great reservoir of patriotic benevolence, to be
dispensed in 'tod-blessed bounty to the wives at d
children, the widows and orphans, the sisters and oilier
female dependents, of our brave soldiery and seamen.
The linal stoppage, or e?< n the suspension, of
his charity would be one of the direst calamities that
tnuld befall our ('ity and State?it would inllict dis
ress. sutfering, and even starvation on numbers now
-omlhi tably fed by its bounty, and perhaps, lend to
rend-nots, in our conservative city, to her serious iunry
and deep disgrace. Come, then, fellow citizens,
o the rescue, promptly, liberally, efficiently, and not
>uly save tli Free Market from destruction or su.spenion,
but sustain it. in healthful vigor, as a God blcss d
and man-blessing institution. Lot donations in
noncy and in kind pour in lavishly from every quaror
of the City and .State; and the consequences will
ie hap|>\* indeed. Not onlv will bi-i'n.d 1ml nm il "ml
neat be sustaiiiingly furnished to soldier's and seanen's
families, bill the boart' of the warrior will be
iheered and iiisarm nerved to victorious battle against
lie vandal and ruthless foe, by the comforting eonvicion
that his wife and little ones are patriotically and
allien ntly eared- for, by their fellow citizens, at homo,
.el our (armors and planters especially, in every scciuu
of the State, semi liberal supplies of vegetables
nd provisions, from their gardens, their fields, their
Kirns and their smoke houses; and swell to overflow*
ug the great reservoir of Free Market charity.
Charity is twice blessed?it blesscth him that gives
s well as him that receives?and blesses the giver
veil more than the receiver
Conic up. then, one and all, to the hallowed work,
