Van Dorn.?'The telegraph brings us intelligence of the death of General Van Dorn, ,al the hands of a man named Peters, in Columbia, Tennessee, but gives no inkling of the cause which led to the commission of the bloody deed. There are vuinors in circulation, however, in regard to the affair, which, it'true, will go far t?? excuse the act oi killing, and places the names of the dead officer in no enviable light before the country, * They may bo without foundation, ami for the repudiation of a gallant officer and an able t-ol dier, we hope they arc. (Jen. Van iJorn J?:is done good service to the Confederalo cause since his appointment to a cavalry command) and the whole country would regret to hear , that lie was saved from dealli on the battle field ? only to die at the hands of a man whom he had deeply wronged. In a few days the particulars will doubtless be made public, and we shall then bv able to judge how far common report has done justice in the matter. The Nashville Press of the SUh coutr.ins a clegram from the Rappahannock , stating that the Yankee loss in Sedwick's was 5t)00 men. Editorially the Press says: "I locker, having changed his base, tells the story, lie is defeated, Our fisrt reports were base fabrications. The picture is frightful, and adds tf> the chronology of our sanguinary defeats in the East. Reports fix the rebel loss at from IP OfiO . - ? ? I""" to 15,000." About Woincsi. D'lsrceli, speaking of the refined and charming women, says: "It is an acquaintance which, when lfahitual exercises a great influence over the tone of the mind even if it does not produce any more violent effects. It refines the taste, quickens the perception, and gives, as it were, a grace ' and flexibility to the intellect." Somewhere else the same writer remarks that men are as much stimulated to mutual effort by the sympathy of gentler sex, as bv the desire of power or fame. Women are more disposed to appreciate worth and intellectual superiority than men, or at least they are as often captivated by the noble manifestations of genius, as by the fascination of manners and the charms of person." And Sidney Smith says: " Among men of sense and liberal politeness, a woman who has successfully cultivated her mind, without diminishing the gentleness and propriety * of her manners, is always sure to meet with a respect and admiration bordering upon enthusiasm." Again, another writer observes that, 44 Of t i nil other views a man may, in time, grow tired, | ! but in tho countenance of women there is a j j variety which sets weariness at defiance." " The j j divine right of beauty," says Junius is the only | divine right a man can acknowledge, and a j pretty woman tho only tyrant be i? not authorI zed to resist."
