OBITUARY. IN MEMORIAM. Died?In May, 1862, in the Hospital at Corinth, Mississippi, of typhoid fevev, in tho 37th year of his ago, Dr JAMES SHROPSHIRE. He was born in Kershaw District, South Carolina. Having received a liberal education, ho studied medicine, aud graduated with distinction at Philadelphia, Penn. Possessed of a handsome property, ho preferred tho more quiet avocation of agriculture to tho practice of his profession, to which ho gave his undivided attention, aud planted with much success. In 1852 he moved to Yullabusha Countv. Miss.. wliero lio resided until the time of liis death. In his loath it can be truly said, that no nobler, braver, or truer patriot has fallen. His imperilled country has not lost a more devoted son, nor his friends and relatives a warmer friend, and a more genial companion. At the tirst call of his loved South, ho cheerfully responded, ntta< hing himself as a private, in Onpt. age's Company, to the 15th Mississippi Regiment? was willi that gallant and devoted regiment, sharing ill its dangers, and undergoing all its hardships, up to, and through with the great battle of Shiloh, lighting irnllnntlv. Ii?rnir?nli?- >- - v ^ 1 , wiivm^iiv/uv win UUIUJ^ one of the seventy-two out of live hundred and lifty-six that went into the fight. He was in the battle ol Fishing Creek, where the lamented ZollicoflVr fell, and there bore him?elf bravely, ever conspicuously winning the admiration of his company, and attracting tho attention of his gallant Captain. Here ho was woundod in the wrist, and while it was bleeding profusely, his Captain said to him, "You are hurt," to which, at the same lime wiping away the blood, he replied, "Yes, but it is only a small scratch." Hiscoolness under lire was striking, and elicited from his gallant comrades in arms, the proud attestation, that lawas as "bravo as the bravest," and by his uniform soldierly bearing and gentlemanly deportment, he won the enviable distinction of being the favorite of his regiment, and the idol of his company. From his nia:?.y qualities of fitness he could have easily obtained position, but lie preferred rather to do the duties of the jprivate soldier than to share the emoluments of office.? In the faithful discharge of those duties, consisted bis highest sense of patriotism. On tho altar of his country he ollered himself a sacrifice, and fell at the post of duty, endeavoring by his skill and kiudness to alcyiatc the sufferings of his sick and wounded comrades. lie was in many respects a remarkable man. (lifted by nature with a strong mind, ho had liberally cultivated it. yet such was his retiring modesty that few only enjoyed the pleasure of his rich, full and instructive conversation. llis thoughts wore deep?his impulses noble?bis feelings generous?lie thought as few men think?his was not a mind to lovo or to mingle with the vain frivolities of the passing hour. He thought rapidly, reasoned deeply, formed opinions only alter a calm and full investigation of his subjects, whether as to persons or to things. His mind was eminently practical?his counsel always disinterested and prudent, if he had any faults t hey consisted in his disinterested generosity and enlarged charity.? llis lovo of truth, integrity of purpose, warmth of friendship, and [lightened moral character, won for him many friends, and made hiiti the especial pleasure ..? tl....... > > --- - ? ? * - i mwni; ? uu uiijujeu ins in Limine association.
