M - ? "j M
ot a prisoner taken on Monday, the strength, of
the maunders at this time is sixteen regiments,
but a few more regiments were daily expeetcd
to arrive. This force is now industriously, at
work entrenching its positions, probably with
,the view of making them, sooner or later, a
^ base of operations against tho city.
At half-past three o'clock a Confederate
force, consisting of the 47th Georgia Regiment
Col. Williams, Hagood's Regiment. S. C, V.,
the Louisiana Batalion of Infantry, and a sec
tion of Preston's Light Battery, attacked the
enemy on Grimball's plantation, at a point
about a mile and a half beyond the Presbyterian
Chureh. The advance of our troops had to be
made for the distance of about a mile over a low
swampy tract of ground, in traversing which they
were necessarily placed at a disadvantage by
being considerably scattered. On emerging
o from the swamp, our men encountered the
Yankees, who were rapidly driven back for
the distance of about three hundred yards, and
to within one hundred and fifty yards of the
river. Here the further retreat of the enemy
was covered by a sharp fire from his batteries,
and also from, a gunboat, which, until, then unseen,
had been lying in the stream.
We havo not as yet obtained a full list of the
casualties in the fight. Capt. Williams, of the
47th Georgia, was killed, and Capt. Cones
* slightly wounded. It is also said that the
Orderly Sergeant of Capt William's company
was killed.
Later.?Our loss in killed wounded and
missing was just sixty-five* The enemy's force
consisted of one regiment of Infantry, two
batteries of artillery, and a squadron of cavalry.
Our own force, which was scattered over a
defensive line ef some extent, was four regiments
6f Infantry; Rcid's battery, a section of
Preston's battery, and another Jight battery.
Gen. Peinberton is on James Island.
The expedition was under command of Gen.
^ Smith.
The blockading squadron on Tuesday consisted
of eight propellor steamers off our Bar,
besides four largo transports just outside the
Bar of the Stono River. ? Mercury.

Liverpool dates to the 28th ult. have been
received. The London Morning Post understands
that tlie demand for the restitution of
the recaptured ship Emily St. P?ere cannot be
complied with. The London Times thinks
that Butler's rule in New Orleans is exceedingly
harsh and sovero, and calculated to make
the raising of the blockade valueless. The Post
is very bitter in its comments upon Butler's
decrees, and savs that not even the Austrians
or Russians ever issued such orders in a conquered
city. Cotton had advanced l-8d. in the
Liverpool market.
