In a manual of the barometer, compiled by Rear Admiral Fitzroy, and just published by the Board of Trade, the following useful observations occur: Whether clear or cloudy, a rosy sky at sun set denotes fair weather; a red sky in the morning bad weather, or much wind, perhaps rain; ? 1- - - J 1 1 / ?? A 1 a High dawn, wma; ana aiow uawn, xair weauicr. Soft looking or delicate clouds foretell fine weather, with moderate or light breezes; hard edged, oily looking clouds, rain. A darlr, gloomy, blue slcy, is windy; but a light, bright blue sky, indicates fine weather, i Generally, the softer clouds look, the less wind, but perhaps the more rain may be expect ed; and the harder, more "greasy," rolled, tufted, or ragged, the stronger the coming wind will prove. Also, a bright yellow sky at sunael, presages wind; a pale yellow, wot.; and thus, hv the nrevalcncc of the red. vellow or gray ! IT " v w w | tints, the coming weather may be told very nearly; indeed, if aided by instruments, almost exactly. Small, inky looking clouds foretell rain; light scud clouds driving across masses, show rain and wind; but if alone may indicate wind only. High upper clouds, crossing the sun, moon, or stars in a direction different from the lower clouds, of the wind then felt below, foretell a change of wind. When sea birds fiy out early and far to seaward, moderate wind and fair weather May be expected. When they hang about the land or over it, sometimes flying inland, expect a strong wind, with stormy weather. There aro other signs of a coming change in the weather known less generally than n?av be desirable, and are, therefore, worthy of notice; such as, when birds of long flight?rooks, swallows and others?hang about home and fly itrk and Hnivn r>r Inw ruin suul wirnl mav hn ox. ? -- - j pected. Also, when animals seek sheltered places, instead of spreading over their usual range; when pigs carry straw in their styes; when smoke from chimneys does not ascend readily, or straight upward during a calm, an unfavorable change is probable. Dew is an indication of fine weather; so is fog. Neither of these formations occur under an overqast sky, or when there is much wind. ' One sees fog occasionally rolled away, as it were, by wind, but seldom or never formed while it is blowing. . A Cool Dun.? Sinco the occupation of Nashville bv the Federal army, many incidents of an amusing nature liave occurred, among which the cool impudence of the following is not the least interesting. It is a dunning letter from a banker in the interior of New York to a Nashville banker: March 17 1862. Dear Sir: Please accept my hearty congratulations on your return to the Union and on the growing supremacy in your State of that "old storv," the Stars and Stripes; and permit me to suggest, as an appropriate commemoration and celebration of the happy event, the payment of that little balance of $72,59, which you have owed me since the 11th of May 1861. Don't send "Seccsh" scrip, as it will not pass here. Respectfully, . Omcir Time.?The Quickest time vet. bv the underground railroad between Richmond and Alexandria, was made by Messrs. Samuel T. Beach and Theodore S. West, two refugees who arrived here in safety on Monday afternoon, having occupied but thirty-six hours in the transit. These gentlemen bring confirmations of the late reports of the movements of the enemy in large masses towards the Peninsula. The Yankee papers were gloating over a grand victory at Corinth, and the defeat of Beauregard. They also claim a victory at Island No. 10, and assert that they captured 2,500 of the garrison. ?Kichmond Jhnquirer. ^ * ? Tbe Northern papers announce that Joseph H, Sears, of Boston. Yankee Postmaster at Port Royal, S. C., in rends to start a paper there, to be eallcd the New South. ? - Age is venerable in man?and would be in woman?if she ever becmae old. For sale by JOHN J McKAlN. ailiCTTL, To (he Sol tilers' Aid Sot'ielies of S. C. In answer to the numerous enquiries which have been made by the different " Aid Societies which have been reccntl}' formed throughout the State, I have been intrueted by his excellency Gov. Pickens, to give the following information. Depots will be established by the Quartermaster General, both in Charleston and t olumbin, for the reception of all donations of clothing; and lie is also charged with the duty of forwarding and distributing the same. Tlio " Department" will receive all donations of clothing, say frock coats and pantaloons, of heavy worsted goods, shirts and drawers, of heavy homo spun or liminej, wool, or noavy couou socks, oikiikcis, new or second linnd, iilso heavy shoos. The plan upon which the State designs supplying her soldiers with all necessarj' clothing, is based upon their willingness to surrender to the State the amount of money appropriated by the Conlederrte < lovernment for this purpose, say forty-two ($42) per annum, this sum not now being sufficient in consequence o^* the greatly advanced cost of material. It is in view of this fact tlmt these laudab.o u Associations" of ladies and gentlemen, are cordially welcomed as coadjutors in this noble work, and hi proportion to their voluntary contributions of labor and materials, will the absolute cost of clothing for our gallant volunteers be reduced. Iii the event that any of the *' Associations should not feel thenise.ves able to furnish both material and labor, the Quartermaster General is instructed by his Kxcelleney tl?e Governor, to rc-imbnrsc such Associations the cost of all materials, at a rate not exceeding similar materials purchased by tno " Department and the quantity allowed for each garment shall be tho same as used in our Manufacturing Bureau. Societies are particularly requested to advise the Quartermaster General of the quantity of work they can do per week, and the amount of donations they will probably send. To prevent confusion and loss, the following method tor marking packages .-liould be stiictly observed. All Societies near Charleston, should ship to Charleston nhd mark thus: No. 1. TO QUARTERMASTER GENERAL Chaulkston, S. C. Trom Aid Society at (here insert place.) Societies near Columbia, should ship and mark thus No. I! TO ASSISTANT QUARTERMASTER, Columbia, S. C. From Aid Society (here insert name.) Tho packages should be marked distinctly, and numbered from one 1) upwards, A correct invoice should accompany each shipment.
