ppp Reported Recognition of the Southern Confederacy 1>y England.?A most extraordinary statement, says the Richmond Examiner, of Monday,,obtained yesterday in the highest official circles of the recognition of the Confederacy by Great Britain. It is certain that a dispatch agent arrived here yesterday from England, having landed in the British Possessions and essaying to reach the South through Michigan and the West. His report is understood to bo that he was arrested in Ohio and robbed of bis dispatches, subsequently efiecting his escape to this City. The assertion of the agent is that the dispatches contained assurances of the immediate recognition of our Govornmcut by that of Great jiritan. "Wc give this statement, which is made in the most positive manner, without adding any opinion of our own, or professing to know how the Government has verified or cred^ itcd the report, beyond scmi-ofiicial expressions of confidence in its truth, which reached us last night. Defences of Ciiauleston Harbor.?In view of the especial malignity, says the Charleston Mercury of the 31st ult., exhibited by the North towards the Palmetto State in general, and towards Charleston in particular, wc are happy to announce that all our defences arc in perfect order, and that Gen. Ripley is ready if not anxious, to give the invaders a warm rereception. Yesterday the families on Sullivan's Island received notice to remove. In the event of an attack, they might have greatly embarrassed our forces. AVe also hear, on good authority, that a series of obstructions, of a somewhat unusual character, have been placed across the harbor entrance. AVc don't envy the occupants of any hostile vessel, that, entangled in these obstructions, may be subjected to the cross fire of the big Columbiadsi Dahlgrccns and Killed guns of the batteries of Forts Moultrie and Sumter. From a gentleman who arrived from Georgetown on Sunday morning, says the Charleston Courier of November 4, we learn that the \ steamer Nina had arived at that place on Saturday, and reported that a Federal propeller k- transport had been driven ashore on Georgetown outtcr Bar on Friday night, during the gale. The Nina reports her as being loaded with army stores, live stoclc, potatos, <fcc. Her officers and crew, nineteen white men and two negros, had delivered themselves up to Major Shaw, of Col. Manigault's Tenth Regiment. Information had also been received, to the effect that another transport was off Pawley Island, apparently in distress. Col. Manigaul^ having been apprised of the fact, had left and crossed over to All Saints with an artillery aud rifle company. Trophies of War.-?Six flags, captured from the Federals in the battle of July 21st, have been sent to Richmond from Manassa, and deposited in the Adjutant-General's ofiicc. Among them is a large U. S* llag, and another ofblue silk, formcrls belonging to a Michigan Regiment. The stars and stripes and the American eagle, now the emblems of despotism, are conspicuous in the lot. Though 110 particular value attaches to the disgraced colors at this day, they will doubtless be preserved as mementoes of the Bull Run races. Some enterprising showman may hcaraftcr seek them for the purpose of illustrating "wax figgcrs" of the convivial Congressmen who came out from Washington to see the fight and ran back precipitately. Batteries on tiif. Potomac.?Our battcrries on tne Lower I'otomac arc reported to be do, ing cxcllcnt in maintaining a strict blockade of the water avenue to Washington. This communication has been hitherto of the utmost importance to the enemy; and it is estimated ^ that five millions of army supplies came up the tc Potomac this season, prior to the unmasking of " ?r_:~~ t xr?.1 ? jmnus. jjciiu xioruicrn accounts mcnW1' * aero was only ten days forago 011 shington, some days ago, and that *Pji( NoK4OCk ],ad been intercepted in the Hci arrived t^nfedcrat batteries. coast in 1 ashore, and <iEN- Evans.?A Yankee gen. ports the gale \n?"s at ^csbnrg that the Icar the const, ltocketl; in this war unless aml 1 - ->na!s of distress world? knc0 dccP rc^^arded as iinpregrirts^io j It is su^ replied that a! The young woman who was "driven to distraction," now fears she will have to walk back. It is curious with what moral fortitude men can bear the misfortune of another. North Carolina has thirty-six regiments in the service, and companies enough to form two more. Never let business drive you. Always try and keep the reins in your hands and drive the " baste" yourself. If you want to treat a lady well, never treat her to anything that intoxicates?not even your own affections. Aim high in life. If you don't hit the stars, you can't land in the mud. Anything is better than stupid inaction. Even a muddy man is worth a half-dozen lazy ones. Mr. Juniper, on seeing "current literature" advertised in the papers, wondered whether it was of the red or black sort of berries. Mr. Juniper has a philosophic turn of miud. North Carolina has established a State Hospital at Petersburg. It is capable of accommodating two hundred and fifty to three hundred 6ick. AVliy arc abc snows on Mount Blanc like a shin-hmhip.r ? Suspicious.?A fast young man says, "if there is anything that he hates to see worse than another, it is to see a girl invariably wipe her mouth after he has kissed her." It does look suspicious, we confess. Mrs. Jackson, the mother of the "martyr hero," has been released, upon her taking the oath of allegiance. She is an old lady, being over seventy years of age. A pretty girl was lately complaining to a Quaker friend that she had a cold, and was sadly plagued in the lips by chaps. " Friend," said Obadiah, " thee should never let the chaps come near thy lips." Get rich if you want your talents appreciated. .Whoever, in these days, has nothing more than modesty and talents, has a slim capital, and must " bust." It you arc not blessed with a rich father, patronize savings banks, young men. A young man was enlarging to a lady friend on the character and qualitications of a young lady, who was a mutual acquaintance. The youth wishing to commend her goodness of heart, laid his hand upon the region of his own heart, and said, "She is all right here." " Oh, fudge," was the reply, " that is half cotton." Another Southerner Sent to Fort Lafayette.?Dr. 11. \V. Jeffrey, of Norfolk, arrived in Philadelphia last week, in the U. S. steamer Mystic, from the coast of Africa, and on refusing to take the oath of allegiance, was forwarded to Fort Lafayette, Spunky old Yankee "Woman.?We find tho following anecdote going the rounds : " An elderly lady, who attended a meeting of the First Vermont Regiment, arose, full of enthusiasm, and said she thanked God that she was able to do somcting for her country. Her two sons, all she possessed in the world, were in the regement, and the only thing she had to regret was that she could not have known it tweny years ago?she would have furnished more." Yankee Affection for the Neoro.?We learn that three out of four negro men, pilots and boatmen, who made their escape at a certain point on the North Carolina coast to one of the Yankee vessels, endeavored to re. j il l i ? turn to tncir nomcs, ana were snot in the attempt. They were worked so hard by the Yankees that they could not stand it and were shot down like dogs when they tried to get away. If one half the pains was taken to improve the human race that there is to improve the breed of sheep, the blood of horses, and the size of pumpkins, we should have some hope for the "perfectibility of mankind." But so long as physical and inoial deformity and disease arc licensed to perpetuate themselves, the breed ol ilshapcn sinners will continue to multiply so ilapidly as to postpone the millenium beyond the boundary of human hope. Seward owns large tracts of land near Brunswick, Georgia, and it may be that for the advancement of his own interests, the fleet which left the Roads a day or two since may proceed to that point. iSTow is the Time TO BUBSCRIBfi. * THE CA]VEr>B]V WEEKLY CONFEDERATE, PUBLISHED EVERY FRIDAY, TWO DOLLARS PER ANNUM.
