of tho cereals. We can afford
lo buy corn whllo cotton brings
present prices, but wo will find it runoos
to purchase Northern hay at

horses, mules, horned cattle,
riio demand for long forage has boon
rery great this season, and tho quanity
of hay imported from tho grain
growing States, 1ms certainly been a
>cavy drain upon the pockets of our
planters. But how much more will
>c required for another year if our
estimate is to bo based upon the small
iroa planted to corn, upon which wo
iavo so entirely depended for this inlispcnsible
article of food. On many
plantations not one acre of corn is
ilantcd, on others, five, ten, and
.wenty acres, with perhaps as many
is ten horses and twenty head of catletobe
wintered. Now, unless we
?avo made up our minds to sacrifice
mi* farm stock to the pangs of hunger,
t behooves us in good time to devise

push this important enterprise to success

and not forgot to urge their
neighbors to respond, promptly, to invitations
to join the Society. I fearj
some are waiting to see whether it is
likely to bo a succoss before giving
their.two dollars. If they will only
reflect how little patriotism- there iu
in such a course, and how just such
rears and delays have thwarted tho
best Bnterprwes of men, I think they
will be ashamed of it, and put their
Bhoulders to tho wheel at once. Tho
good and intelligent have, generally,
pronounced in favor of Agricultural
Societies at the present time, not only
in our District, but throughout the
State, and in almost every Southern
State. We think there is a greater
need of them now than ever before.
We must have some bond of union between
tho intelligent citizens of the

and interchange of ideas,
