was one of llio most successful affairs
of llio kind -which it lias been our

unci us it comes rolling down to Abbeville
on Wednesday next, we hope to
Bend it speeding on iU way to the seaboard,
crushing down all opposing obstacles
to its progress. The spirit of
the people is fully amused. They ure
determined that (his fair heritage <>f
their fathers shall not pars from their
hands without ft struggle?that, come
what may, they will show the s,?irit
of men who know their rights and
dare, maintain them.
The courtesy of those puhli?--spiritcd
gentlemen, President Hammc-tt and
Superintendent Meredith, had placed
a handsome accommodation train at
the servico of our citizens, and by fi
o'clock a. m., wu were making good
' time .behind the pufling locomotive,
with a fair representation from Abbeville,
under the care of that polite t
conductor, Mr. Geo. JL. Isaacs. On
board was our distinguished fellowcitizen,
the Hon. A. Burt, one of the
speakers of the day; and in his pros
viu'o, wc leit that wc carricd "Ca\sarand
Lis fortunes." All regret ted the
absence of Gen. McCiowan. who w:is
known to have ma<le ample preparations
for, and to have been eagerly
loooking forward to the occasion, but
was detained by sickness at the
eleventh hour'. At Hodges', wc took
in Col. D. W. Aiken, thn canvasser
for this Congressional District, and
others; and with fresh accessions at
JDonaldsville, Honca Pat h and Bolton,
we reached Anderson with a crowded
car. At Ilonca Path, wo took in tbe
Greenville brass band, who .enlivened
us with HOmo sweet music, and whoso
eoul-stirring airB during the day contributed
very much to the pleasures of
?he occasion.
Arriving at 10 o'clock, an hour's
interval enabled us to visit the Village,
which was already "thronged
with the incoming tide. Wo met.
here many of our citizens from- tho
upper part of the District who had
cemc in priVato convoy an ecs, and had
tho pleamiro of reiaewtng inivny army
acquaintances aiftong citiaCns of the
Upper Districts. The place itself has
