met last night, at 7 o'clock, in Califttlieuic Hall.

Allow me to return to you iny very sincere nnd
cordial thauks for the compliment, you#have
conferred upon mc this evening. To preside
in an assembly of South Carolinians, nt any
time, but especially at nn occasion like the
present, is an honor-to which a just pride can
uot be insensible.
I shall not, gentlemen, recite to you the
thrilling story of the pnsL 1 will not recount
ur reverses and our losses. They have be<m
weighty, and they ?re sad. Let me say only,
that w?c have lost a great cause, and we have
lost our ancient and our cherished principles.
We have mot this evening for the noblest objects
tliut appeal to the heart, or the under?
'.aiidiut:?objects worthy of the statesman and
the philanthropist. We meet to hold crave
deliberation torching the welfare and the Imp
piuess of two rtces. We meet to remove Jrom
III# fearful wrecks of the |>a?t whatever wisdom
hihI statesmanship can save. But I inujt
not indicate, and i will not anticipate the policy
you may adopt. I can but assure you o(
my earnest wuhea that your deliberations may
be succesaful.
A paper wns then prcsenled by Gov. Terry,
proposing that the Convention unite with .i,hc
Democratic party of the North ; that it send
delegates to the Natidnal Convenfion in New
Yerk, on the 4th of July, urgsng the pfcoplo to
vote against tbe Constitution, &c.
