COTTON VS. CORN.
Under tliis title, we Me, in the la*t number
/ot tlio Columbia riuenix, a communication
froru our esteemed fiieml Co'. 1*. Wyatt Aiken,
controverting (He position of that j>aper in nj
vising our planters to ruiso corn rattier tlinn
cotton. Ak lie well remarks?" tbe prime duty
of tliw Sontlu rn planter is to lend liis entire en
ergy to tbe cultivation of those crops, th.it U
Jiiui will be most remunerative." It is a que*
tion uot of patriotism, but of dollars and con is
and even if it were, duty and intereat lien
coincide?self-love and patriotism dictate tin
lime policy. We me to cultivate those cropi
which pay best, and what are these, but tlion
wliii>h onr otimnla and noil are best adapted
Are IbcM cotton nnd wheat, let these then bi
our staples, at the euiue time llint other crop
arc not neglected.
We make the following extracts :
*' Abbeville is on? of the largest and tnos
productive Districts in thcState. The averng*
yield of iad cotton here per acre is about
pounds, which will jiejd 150 pounds of /??,
cojton and twelve bushels of eeed. The ave
rage yield of corn ie about twelve and a hal
bushels per acre?tlie eatno acre producing tw<
bushels of pea? ond 15 0 pounds of fodder.?
The value, theo, to tho planter, and hrnc<
to the District and State, of these respective
acres may be be computed thus :
150 lbs. of lint cotton, at 20c $30 00
12 bushels of cotton seed, at

Excess in favor ?>f acre in cotton . . .$07;
Cotton lias not yet fallen to twenty oenta pc
pound, and, I hope, never will. Corn can now
be bought in Baltimore and delivered iu Abbe
villa District for less than $1.50 par buphel
and had the South last year mode her usual
corn crop, corn would now be n drug on th<
market, at per bushel.
It may be urged that it requires more labo
to cultivate an acre of cotton than one of corn
Not a Of The labor that will produce twelvi
and a half bushels cf corn will produce 45<
poupds of cotton, and oftener than otherwiei
-will produce 600 pouuds. Experience hai
taught that a hand who will cultivate twelv<
acraa will do so with more ansa by planting
sight seres in cotton and four in cotton, thnr
rby putting it all in corn or all in cotton. Ant
if to, tha planter, with a crop of two-thirdi
cotion and ona-tliird corn, will realize rnor<
net moaey fiom his crop than by planting all ir
com.
Did ?paee allow, I think I could prove tlisi
,corn was the least remunerative crop a Soul)
Carolina planter can cultivate. Corn cannot
be shipped to exchange for such family euppliei
as wa do not and cannot glow ; corn will noi
