Tax Collector, ?t the nut election. THE FUOTXAL OF CAPT. WW. T. HASKELL. Th? remains of Capt. Wm. Thompson Hat? Icell, who fell attha battle of Qettysburg, were brooght home to oor Village, for interment, on Monday eveniug ia??. They were received at the Depot, by the members of the old company with whioh the deceased was first usuoci ated at the beginning of the war, aod escorted to the Episcopal Church, where after appropriate religions services, and in the presence of Borrowing relative* and friends, and the sympathizing members of the community, they were consigned to their last resting place in the adjacent cemetery. Tbo services were conducted by the Rev. Mr. Johnson, and bis funeral discourse from the t*xt "Weep ye not for the dead.1' (Jeremiah XXIt; 10.) whilst paying a touching tribute, to the virtues of the deceased, and the great cause to which iney were consecrated, presented a clear and forcible exposition of the grounds of Christian consolation, as exhibited in the contemplation of the life and death of the Christian hero. Capt. Hnskell wns one. of the nohlest of the young soldiers, that oar Distriot give to the war?one of a band of gallant brothers, whose protr&ss was illustrated upon so many of its battle fields?distinguished as much by the generous impulses of the patriot soldier, at by the exemplary deportment of the Christian gentleman. Enjeying the best of early training, within the hallowed circle of home influ cnce*, he bad graduate'! at the University of Virginia, and was just entering upon bis career, when the cause of n distraoted country, enlisted the sympathies and absoibtd the dc voiion or his ardent and patriotic nature, fie was among the first to join Capt. Perrin'e Company, in Col. Gregg's first Regiment, and as a private in tho ranks of that company, he took liis first lessons iu the art of war on the Binds of Sullivan's and Morris' Islands. To the surviving members of that company, we need notsny with what cheerfnlnea* with what alacrity, nay, with what enthusiasm, ha endured every privation and performed every duiy. We all admired him as the model of every manly virtue, and were endeared to him by his kind, generous, and ?elf-sacrificin( nature. We ourselves oan never forget many aets of kindoess done, and constant and unremitting attention shown, under circumstances when they could be best appreciated, and which could only have been prompted by the gentlest* ? j ? r..va>, >uu uiuBb wiue-reacumg sympathies. We respected him too for his rigorous act!re intellect, enlarged by study, and liberalised by ' r cullurp, proposing to btmtelf tlio highest mod flftof excellence, and preparing by a proper development and exerciso of all his powers to <ii?ohurge bis duty fully to Ood and his coun'ry. With Col. Gregg's Regiment, Capt. Fenian invasion of Canada, I'M excited very geueral sympathy among the Irish population of this ooontry, aodinduftsd onr own government to make application to the British Minister in their b?half. In their fnvor many cxltn listing cireamstanoes are urged, -wbioh it is alleged would moie clearly have appeared, had the prisoner's witnesses all besn allowed to testify. I Colonel Ljnoh is said to have declined a Co! onel's commission in the service, to have been I present merely as a newspaper reporter, and to have taken no active part in the prcseding*. Father McMahon sterna to have been present merely m a spiritual tdviitr. The quoitiou ii one pertaining exclusively to the adtiiiniatra! tion of the criminal law of Great Britain, and in which thia Government cannot interfere, except by urging considerations which nre addressed to the magnanimity and forbearance of a great power. Clemaoey, especially with re* gard to state offences, is often the truest policy, and ia this mattar it would seem that the British Government can afford to be generous. The Fenian bubble has burst, and can no longer if ever afford gronnd for serious apprehension. A liberal and humane policy will do more than anything eUa to allay irritation, and give the finishing stroke to Fenianism. Gov. Je5hins Message.?We have read with interest the long and able message of Gov. Jenkins to the Legislature of Georgia, now in session. The message takes strong ground against the Constitutional Amendment?ores nta a hopeful view of credit and resources of the State, and recommends an annual appropriation of $120,000 to a (inking fund for canceling fhe public debt, now amounting to $5,640,000?urgen llie support of the University and Common 8chool education?and the encouragement of tha agricultural and mechanical pursuits. Hie mesnage states that 185,000 bujhe's of corn have been purchased at a cost of less then $1 per bushel, being 4$ bushels to each beneficiary reported. It concludes with the following timely suggestions: 1st. It becomes us to cultivate among ourselves uoity of feeling, of opinion, and of action: uuity among tha people, unity among the Departments of Government. 2d. Our interest lies in eschewing political excitemont, studiously avoiding all conflict vrith authorities unchosen by uc, but placed over us, and employing our active energies in rebuilding our own watte place* and developing our neglected resources. Whilst others rage and wiangle over ephemeral issnes, let u? be husy with the real, abiding concerns of life. Thus shall we emerge from the period of ostracism, wiser, more thriving aod more respeo ted than ever. Sd. It behooves us, above all, lo keep ourselves in proper relation wilh the Supreme Ru ler of the Uuiverse. To this end, it is right and proper that, on a day to be appointed, our whole people should simultaneously prostrate themselves before the Throne of Grace, rendering thanks for blessings enjoyed, imploring forgiveness for errori <ommitted. and seeking light to guide us on our r> gged, darl'.eoed way. 1 nave refrained from inviting such a proceeding, believing thm, in our extremity, it is more fitting that the movement be made by the immediate representatives of the people. The Episcopal Church of this place had the pleasure during the past week, of receiving t visit from their Diocesan, the Right Thoa. T. Davis, D. D., Bishop of the Dioecse of South Carolina. We were gratified to see, that though the Bishop kaa been nearly bliud for years past, and though he is now io feeble health, bis intellect seems to have "lost none of its original brightness/' sad that he discourses on sacred themes with hie wonted clearness, power and earnestness. He preached two admirable sarin on a, one on Saturday, and another on Sunday, when the rite of confirmation was administered- His sermon on Saturday was a discourse upon Christian etkies?showing that morality finds ita true basis in the religious element of our nature, and derives its highest sanctions from religions obligation.
