To the Frccdmcn of South Carolina, Gcoryia and Florida : % In entering upon that portion of my duty r which relates to your welfare, I deem" it proper I to address to you a few words of counsel. By tlio Emancipation Proclamation of President r Lincoln, the laws of Congress and Hie will of ) God you >havo been declared -''forever free." ' | . At the outset of your new career it is impor- f r tant tliftt you should understand some oi the 1 duties and responsibilities of freemen. Your ' fir*t duty is to go to work at whatever honest labor your bands can find to do4. and provide | food, clothing and shelter for your families.? Bear in miud that a man who will not work * 1 should not b$ allowed to cat. Labor is en-. nobling to the character, and, if rightly di- J I rected, brings to the laborer all the comforts and luxuries of life. The only argument left to those who would keep you ia slavery is, t that in froedom you will not work; that the lash is necessary to dri ve you to the cotton and rice fields; that these' fair lands which yoii have cultivated eo many years in slavery, will now bo left desolate. On the Sea Islands of South ^Carolina, Georgia and Florida, where 1 your brethren have been free for three years, 1 l they have nobly shown how much better they ' can work in freedom. ~ Oyer forty thpusand i are now engaged, in cultivating'the soil, their ( children arc being educated, and tftpy fire eelf- ' sustaining, happy and free. . Some are working for wa^es, others are cultivating the land ou shares, giviug one-half to the owner. j The Agents of the Freednien'k Bureau will aid yo'u ranking contracts to work for fair waSes for your former masters of others -who may esire to hire you, or will locate you on small farms of forty pcres, which you can hjje at an ! easy rent, with an.opportunity to purchaso at ^ , low rates any - time within three years. These are splendid opportunities. Frcedmen, let not a day pass ere you find some work for your I , hands to do, and do it with all your might.? r ^ Plough and plunt, digand lio??, cut and gather ' c in the harvest. Let it- be Men thnt where in i - alaverj- there was raised a blade of corn or a | jj >. pound of cotton, in ireeuoni there will he /ici. j ' ? I r.? i,*.w-i?I.? J -- > _ ,w irv,.WViMi wir* fivxix3u i (tiocuuuu liiiu ineil . , ahould not be found in freedom; they are the j vices of slavery. Keep in good faith nil your | J contracts and agreement-*, remembering always i ^ thot you nre a slave no longer. While guard- I ing carefully yotM* own rights, be as careful not ; , b to violate your neighbors. ''Do unto others - as yolvwoubl they should do unto you." { ,? In cases where you feel that you have been j wronged, it is i either wise nor expedient to ( e take redre.'B into your own bands, but-leave , e the matter to be settled by impartial friends of e \ioth partiec. In cases of difficulty between ^ white men and yourselves. you should appeal to one of the agents of this linieuu in your j ll vicinity, who may appoint one referee,- the ( other party tine, and you Hhould appoint a third, and the decision of the majority hhould be con . sidered final. By this ea*y mode of settling difficulties inucb trouble may be avoided. Iu slavery j-ou< only thought of to day.? Having nothing to hope for beyond the pre sent, yo.u did not think of the future, but, like the ox atid horse, thought only of the food und work for thi day. In freedom you mtist have g an eye to the future, and have a plan onclob. ject in life. Decide no* what you are lo do i f Tiaxt j ear?where J'ou afe to pla^it iu the spring, and how much?and iu the autumn auu winter prepare your lana and manure for the early spring planting. After being sure ( that you have'plonted sufficient corn at)d potatoes for food, tben put iu nil ,lbe cotton and ' I rice you can, for thetfe are the crops which will e pay-the beat. Bear in mind that cotton is a * ) regal plant* and the more cnrefully it -is culti- c . vatcd, the greater will be the crop. Let the ? Y world see ere long the fields of South Carolina, 6 i <Jeorg1a and FloHiJa white With this impor- t" f tant staple, cultivated by. free labor. . ' r In slavery the domestic relations of man '* i and wife, were generally disregarded. Virtue, 1 j purity and honor among men and women were j not Required or expected. All this must change c 1 now that yon are free. The domestic altfr ( must be held eacred, and with je&loti* dare , must you guard the purity .of a wife, a sister, ' cfr a daughter; nod the betrayer o^ their hona oraliould be punished, andhejd .up to* univer. sal condemnation.
