RULES FOR CONVERSATION.
The bee lias- the art of extracting honey
from every flower which contains it, even
from some which are not a little nauseous
or poisonous. It has also been said that
the conversation of every individual, whatever
may bo tho condition of his mind or
circumstances, may be made a means of iin
provenient. IIow happy would it be, then
if man possessed the skill of tho bee, and
knew how to extract tho good, and n-ject
the bad or useless!
Something on this subject is, indeed,
known. There are rules, by the observance
of which we may derive much valuable information
from thn ronvoisation of those i
among whom we live, even (hough it should
felnte to the most ordinary subjects and
?>ncerns. And not only so, we may often
devise moans to chatty6 tho conversation,
cither directly, l>y gradually introducing
other topics of discourse, or indirectly, by
patient attempts to enlarge and improve
and elevate the minds of our associate?.
Ever}' individual lias excellences; and
almost every person, however itrnoratrt. has
thought upon some one subject more than
many,?perhaps most?ethers. Some excel
in the knowledge of husbandry, some in
gardening, some in mechanics, or manufactures,
some in mathematics, and so on. In
all your conversation, then, it will be well
to ascertain as nearly as you can wherein
the skill and excellence of an individual
lies, and put him upon his favorite subject.
Nor is this difficult. Every one tcill, of his I
own accord, fall to talking on his favorite
topic, if you will follow, and not attempt to
I 1* t _
uim.
Except in a few raro cases, eveiy one
wishes to bo the hero of the circle where lie !
? conversing. If, therefore, you sock to
iciprovo in the greatest possible degree
from the conversation of those among whom
you may he thrown, you will sillier a companion
to take his own course, anil 'out of j
the abundance of his heart,' lot his 'mouth !
speak.5 By this means you may easily
collect llio worth and excellence of every
one you meat with ; and he able to put it
together (or your own msc upon future occasions.
The common objections to the views here
presented, are, that they encourngc dissimu- |
lntion. But this does not appear to me to |
be tho fact. In suffering a person, for the |
Fpace of a single conversation, to he the ;
bero of the circle, we do not of ncccssity j
concede his superiority generally; wc only !
help him to be useful to the company. It;
often happens that vou are thrown !
persons whom you cannot benefit by be- j
coming the boro of the circlc yo?rs< If, for
they will not listen to you; and perhans
will not understand your term?, if they Jo.
If, however, there appear to be others in ;
the company whoso object, like your own
is improvement, you might expose yourself j
to the just charge of being eelfioh, should 1
you refuse to converse upon your own favor- j
ite topics in your turn; and thus to let the [
good deed go round.
Never interrupt another, but hear him j
out. You will understand him the better
for it, and he able to give him the better J
answer. It you only give him an oppor- J
tunity, lie may say something which you I
have notyet heard, or explain what you did
not fully understand, or even mention some- |
thing which you did not expect.
There are individuals with whom you
may occasionally come in contact, from
whoEe conversation you will hardly derive
w-R' -* " r*

use wanton, or obscene or profane language.
For, besides the almost utter hopelessness
of deriving any benefit from such person?,
and the pain you must inevitably suQ'er in
hearing them, you put your own reputation
at hazard. 'A man is known by the company

the sensualist. Avoid, loo, the known liar,
for similar reasons.
If you speak in company, it is not only
modest but wise to speak late ; for by this
means, you will be able to renderyour conversation
moro acceptable, and to weigh
beforehand the importance of what yon
utter; and you will be less likely to violate
the good old rule, 'think twice before you
speak once.' Let you r words be as f<;w as
will express the sense which you wish to
convey, especially when strangers or men
of much greater experience than yourself
are present; fnd above all, bo careful that
what you say be strictly true.
Do not suffer your feelings to belray you
into too great earnestness, or vehemencce :
and never bo overbearing. Avoid triumphing
over an. antagonist, even though you
might reasonably do so. You gain noth-'
ing. On the contrary, you often confirm
him in hia erroneous opinions. At least,
yon prejudico him again6t yourself. Zimmerman.
insists that we should suffer an
antagonist to get the victory over us occasionally,
in order to raise his respect for
himself. All finest^ of thie kind, however,
as Christians, I think it better to avoid. '

Tin? compound will ho fount! a great prometcr
of health, when taken in the spring, to expel
the foul humors which fester in the Mood
at that season of the year, liy the timely expulsion
of tliem many rankling disorders are
nipped in the bud. Multitudes can, by the
aid of this remedy, spare themselves from the
endurance of foul eruptions and ulcerous pores,
through which the system will strive to rid itself
of corruptions, if not assisted to do this
through the natural channels of the body by
an alternative medicine. Cleanse out the vitiated
blood whenever you Cnd its impurities
bursting thromrh the ekin in nimnlos ?mniinn?
or Bores; cleanse it when you fin J it in obstructed
and sluggish in the veins; demise it
whenever it is foul, nnd your feelings will tell
vou when. Even where no par'.icular disorder r
i9 fi-lt, people enjoy better health, nnd live
longer, for cleAiiging the blood. Keep the <
blood healthy, nnd all is well : but with this J
pabulum of life disordered, there can be no i
lasting health. Sooner or later something must '
jn> wrong, and the great machinery of life is ]
disordered or overthrown.
Sarsnpnrilla has, nnd deserves much, the reputation,
of accomplishing these ends. But
the world has been egregiously deeeived 1>3' J
preparations of it, partly' because the drug l
alone has not nil the virtue that is claimed for
it. but more because inany preparations pretend 1
ing to be concentrated extracts of it. contains
but little of the virtue of Sarsaparllla or any
thing else.
During late years the public have been misled
by large bottles pretending to give a quart
of Extract of Sarsaparilla for one dollar. Most
of these hnve been frauds unon the *iplr for
they not only contain little, if any, Saraaparilla
but oftrn no ctirativc properties whatever.
Hence bitter and painful disappointment has 1
followed the use of the various extract* of 1
Saraaparilla which flood the market, until the 1
name itself is justly despised, and has become
synonymous with imposition and cheat. Still
we call this compound Saraaparilla, and intend
to supply such a remedy as shall rescuel
the name from the load of obloquy which rests 1
upon it. And wp think we have ground for
believing it has Virtues which are irresistible j
by the ordinary run of the diseases it is iiitcn- j
tended to cure. In order to secure their com- '
plete eradication from the system the remedy 1
should be udiciously taken according to direcions
on the bottle.

Scrofula or liiiiKN Kvil,
Is ft constitutional disease :i corruption of tlic
blood, l>y which this fluid becomes vitiated,
wenk, and poor. Heing in Mie circulation, it
pervades the whole body, nnd may buret out
iu disease on ftny pnrt of it. No organ is free
from its attacks, nor is there one which it may
not d^ktroy. The scrofulous taint is variously
eauscd by mercurial disease, low living, disordered
or unhealthy food, impure air, filth and
filthy habits, the depressing vices, and, above
nil, l>y the vencrinl infection. Whatever bo its
urigin, it is hereditary in the constitution dc?
Rccndiiig.J.'from parents to children unto the
third and "fourth generation:" indeed, itscem*
to be the rod of Ilim who Fays, "1 will visit
the iniquities of the fathers upon their children."
Its effects commence by disposition from Mio
blood of corrupt or ulcerous matter, which, iu
the iangs, liver, and internal organs, is termed
tubercles ; in the glands, swellings ; and on the
surface, eruptins or sores This foul corrup- ..
tion, which ueuders in the blood, depresses the
energies of life, so t hat. scrofulous constitutions
not only suffer from scrofulous complaints, but
they have far 1 -ss power to withstand the attacks
of other diseases; consequently, vast
numbers perish by disorders whieh although
urn. i-croiuious hi men* nature, are ntill rendered
lutal liy this taint in the system. Most of tlio
consumption which decimates the human family
has its origin directly in this contamination
and many destructive diseases of the liver, kidneys,
hrain, and indeed, of all the organs arisa
from or an? aggravated by the same cause.
One quarter ofull our people are scrofulous ;
their persons nre invadod by this lurking infection,
and their health is undermined by it.
To cleanse it from the system we must renovate
the hlood by nn alterative medicine, and invigorate
it by healthy food and exercise. Such
a mci'icine we supply in
Ayor's
Compact Extract of Sarsaparilla,
the most effectual remedy which the medical
skill <>f niir times can devise for this everywhere
prevailing and fatal malady. It is combined
from the most active remedial? that have
been discovered for the expurgation of this
fnul disorder from the blood, and the rescue of
the system from its destructive consequences,
llenee it should be einplo\ rd for the cure of not
only scrofula, but also those other affections
which arise from it, such as Kruptive and skin
disease*, St. Antony's Fire, Hose, or Krysipelns
