Hastings Gantt, arrived in town on Friday
last having driven from Columbia in
their private conveyances. The fine
horses and handsome carriages were very
much admired by their grateful constituents.
Mr. Gantr's turnout is an elegant
barouche, which with the team cost probably
a thousand dollars. Mr. Greene's
horses and trot ing wagon are very nobby,
worth ten or twelve hundred dollars,

A colored man formerly of Beaufort
died in Atlanta la?t week.
Col. A. McB. Peeples has been
appointed assistant postmaster at Varns*
ville.
Burglars.
On Sunday night a thief entered the
house of Mr. Joe Fripp, on Bay street,

and took all ms ctonnng, ocn w mo
shoes. Mr. Fripp besides the clothine
lost a few dollars in money, and all his
express keys, which put him to much
inconvenience. The thief must have
climbed up the veranda pillar in order
to effect his entrance.
The Memorial Committee.
Col. Wm. Elliott and J. G. Thompson,
editor of the Commercial, left Beaufort
on Monday morning on the way to
Washington as members of the committee
appointed by the Taxpayers Con?
volition to present the memorial to Congress
and the President.

The Waltham Salvage Case.
In the U. S. court on Thursday last,
Judge Bryan made the following decree |
in admiralty: In the case oPJumes Early

and the expenses for the custody and sale
of the vessel to $926 51. The libellanfs.
having accepted the sum of $600 as sal*
vage, it was ordered that the march. I pay

in his hands, pay the expenses and
costs reported by hint, and that the salvors
pay the balance of the expenses and
costs amounting to $104 61, and thai
this payment be in settlement of all claim
for salvage on the vessel and cargo.
The Railroad Meeting.
On Wednesday night last, a large
number of citizcus assembled at the council
house to consider the feasibility of
connecting tho Port Royal railroad with
the wlurve and river front of Beaufoit.

Wilson was appointed to correspond with
the railroad authorities and to ascertain
what the disposition of property holders

a desire to meet the question of a permanent
track into the town. The committe
above mentioned met on Friday and requested
the Iutcndant, Mr. Alfred Williams

Charles W. Kldridgc, Ksq., who
has charge of the Direct Tax Lands in
the Internal revenue bureau at Washington
has been in town since Friday last
engaged in examining into the details o'
the redemptio act and otherwise t rying
to get light on the most conip 'etc muddie
now existing in the United States.
Mr. Taluiadgc a national bank
inspector, has been in Beaufort for a few
days, giving some attention to the Frecdluan's
Bank.
Wui. II. Mdiill, has been appointed
inspector of limber and lumber at l'ort
Royal.
Dr. J<?1in A. Johnson, has just received
from Washington, his appointment as
Examining Surgeon for Pensions. lie
succeeds Dr. Stuart, who resigned a
" short time ago.
Dr. Johnson's office for the present,
is at the county court house ; second
floor.
The Greenville Republican is another
paper which objects to being led in

It evidently agrees with the pertinent
remark of Humbert, who said in the

up."

commenting on the recent elections says,

The Freed men's Bank,
i The recent investigation of the affairs
of this hank at Washington may lead to
r a closing of all the Southern branches
and the winding up of the entire business.
1 On Monday last the president of the
? bank had a hearing before the committee
and stated that he was satisfied that special
necessity for this institution no longer
existed. He was willing to have it
wound up. The committee wili not at
present report any scheme for winding
up the principal bank at Washington,
but will report n bill to close up the

by the officers of the Chamber of Com- '
merce, of Savannah, the officers of the
Savannah Cotton Echange, and General :
Joseph E. Johnson, General J. F. Gilmer,
and other prominent citizens, has ,
been addressed to the chief signal officer \
of the United States, at Washington,
asking that precautionary signals may be
hereafter displayed from the signal station
at Tybee Lighthouse. a
The establishment of signals that can .
be observed at Tybec will be of impor- ,,
tance and benefit to vessels plying to this h
harbor and along the coast, in warning ?
their commanders and crews of the f,
weather changes that may be expected ; i<
and to accomplish this end, will enlarge si

?The City of Augusta is rejoicing
at the prospective establi hment of another
factory within its limits. The new ?
enterprise, which is to be called " Dub- t<
lin Mi.Is,'' has already been chartered,
and will start with a capital stock of *
$150,000.

A Volcano In North Carolina.
The Great Mountain, in North Caro- I
lina, it seeuis has commenced to grumble I
loudly, to the dismay of the inhabitants ^
around its base, and has opened a fissure ;
through which it emits its fiery breath. *
The people on and around Bald Moun- b
tain are becoming very much excited
about a rumbling noise that is almost
constantly going on in the mountain,
jarring their houses so that the dishes ^
rattle on the shelves. It has been going
on now nearly one week, and there is
about one-half acre of lan 1 on the mountain
that the snow would not lay upon.
This mountain lays in this end 01 Mellow
ell county, in the bend of Broad
Kiver, ju-t opposite the Chimney Rook. ^
These shocks have continued ever j
since the month of January, and every j
day increase in violence. If a good
volcano should burst out in that region ^
it will be the mailing of it. We trav- (
died all through that country and climbed
over the foot hills at the base of Bald
Mountain last summer. We would go
again this summer if we were promised ^
a first class volcano. | t

A few days ago a wa 1:011, drawn by a
yoke of long-horned lexas cattle, halted
011 Lafayette street. The wagon contain- <

were the adjuncts. The party were from
Texas, and were returning to their old

turned to the small boy, her sou, and

?A fearful outrage was perpetrated
l>y a mob at Ahaualalco, in the State
of Jalisco, Mexico, Sunday March Nth,
the priest delivered an incendiary sermon j
in the course of which he advocated the
extermination of the Protestants. This
so excited his Ifearers that a inobgathered
in the evening, and proceeded to the
residence of llev. John Stevens, a Congregational
minister, sent out by the
Huston Hoard of Foreign Mis-ions, with
cries of "long live the priests." They

I clergyman; smashed his head to a jolly
: and chopped his body into pieces. 'I hoy
afterwards sacked the house, and carried
