c Resolved. That in the death of Stephen
C. Millett, the people of Port Royal
sincerely feel that they have lost a
warm friend, and an enterprising and
a valuable citizen.
He was one among us who stood out
in bold relief; his open, generous and
honest heart and noble aims had won our
oonfidcUCe and high esteem. His ambition
Was to be honorably and profitably
occupied in developing the wealth and
resources of our vicinity^ and he always
encouraged and stimulated the energies
of his fallows itt industrial pursuits. Aclive
and ebergOtiO, confident of his own
poWere, he knew no uilsurmourttable obstacle
in any enterprise he undertook.
In the prime pf manhood, in the
miast of Well directed efforts of a public
nature, ana full of public spirit, he passed
away. With deep sorrow and earnest
grief we niotlfd his decease.
Resolved: In kind regard for his bereaved
and afflicted companion, and his
dear little family, we offer our heartfelt

No Special Term Needed*
We hear that efforts are beiDg made to
induce Judge Maher to hold a special
term of court next month. We have
Consulted with several lawyers, those
having the heaviest civil business in the
county, and they arc unanimous in the
Opinion that no special term is necessary
There are very few prisoners in the jail,
and no cases of importance. The county
has already paid heavy expense* in witness
and juror fees, and we think it will
be a great injury if we are called upon
Tor the expenses of a special term. No
one is interested in it but the officers of
court and they ought to have better
judgment than to press the matter upon
the judge.
Proceedings of County Commissioners.
The board met on Tuesday afternoon,
Messrs. Pritchard and Watcrhousc present.
The advertisement in regard to the redemption
of past indebtedness was prepared.
Checks were issued to various
parties. A resolution was adopted pretesting
against any special term of court
this spring. Adjourned to meet on the

written to S. B. Wright, .deputy collector
of internal revenue in reference to a
license, signing himself "yours truly.''
Mr. Wright wants a more definite sjgnaatore

Cotton Claimants.
Persous whose cotton was taken or deatroyed
by the United States forces during
the war can obtain information relating
to the recovery of the value of

Robbers About.
An attempt was made on Saturday
night last to break into the residence of
Geo. M. Wells. The thieves were scared
off before effecting on entrance, uiueh to
the chagrin of Mr. Wells, who was preparing
a warm reCeptioh for them.
Oil Monday night the saloon of Grace
Myers was entered and a' doat, counterpane,
and other artioles wero taken.
We hope our citizens will promptly
shoot these fellows if they get a sight of
them in their midnight raids.' It will
save expense to the county, au unnecessary
trip of the sheriff to Columbia, aud
the short sojourn now allowed by the
governor to those sent to the penitentiary
