MILLETT. We feel that we are not gratifying a mere idle curiosity in giving to the public the following incidents connected with the illness and death of Stephen C. Millett. Wc are only replying to the affectionate inquiries of his many friends. He left Port Royal on Monday, February 16, and arrived in Columbia on Tuesday the 17th, for the purpose of at tending the meetings of the taxpayer's convention, to which he was a delegate. On Wednesday he comp'aincd of feeling feverish, but did not seem to think much of it On Thursday he showed that he was far from well, and in the night was very restless with a severe headache. It was not until Friday morning that he saw a physician. The symptoms of virulent malarious poison rapidly developed, un- j til on Saturday night very little hope j could be entertained of his recovery. lie had the best medical attention and all that science could do was done. He had . around h:m, also, a:tacked friends who .-pared not hint: ro alleviate his condition. We- eu tiot forbear an expression of gratitude to M : > k of the Wheeler Hou.-e, for lus kintiiie s. Mr. Millett wa> naver more than semiconscious during thfc last forty-eight hours of his life. He expired at five o'clock on Tuesday morniug. His remains were taken to Augusta where a special train provided by the kitidness of President Jackson, of the Port Koyal railroad, brought theiu to Beaufoit on Wednesday tuorning. They were iaid in the room of the Keadiug Association to await the funeral services. A meeting of citizens was held at noon on Wednesday, and watchers were appointed and a resolution passed to close all places of business froui three to live on Thursday. The hal. an J the front of the building were draped m mourning. The bursal casket occupied the ccutre of the room. The ladies of the town sent in beautiful wreaths, crosses and boquets of natural flowers, which were laid upon the casket. Masonic emblems in evergreens were provided by his brethreu of the fraternity. During the'day the citizens of all classes and conditions thronged the room to loo.. '" .for the last time upon one ?o long known and appreciated in this community Hie plate upon the casket recorded his age as 33 years, 9 months and 14 days. On Thursday at three o'clock the funeral cortege loruied on Bay street, opposite the reading room. The pall bearers, Messrs. J. C. Mayo, Geo. Waterhouse, P. M. Whitman, Dr. 11. M. Stuart. 1>. C. Wilson, George Gage, W. C. Bellows, an ; II. G. Judl, placed the casket in the hearse, and it was followed to the Episcopal church by a procc.-sjon of citizcus which seemed to include every resident of the viciuity, both white and colored, t rom Jrort ivoyai a special train brought many attached trietida and from up the road others came. Tiie church wtu> thronged with people. Rev. Dr. J. R. Walker, read the beuutifuTaud impressive services of his church, after which the body was committed to the earth, by the side of his brother, the late Rev. 11. 11. Millett. It is safe to say that the loss of no other man would nave cu.L-d lorth sueh a universal expression of sorrow. The authorities of the Fort Royal railroad requested an the officers ana employes that could be spared from duiy to attend the funeral. At l\y^ Jtayu! the feeling was peculiarly barucsl. Tlie loss there' was felt by each uiau to be a personal one. The founder and bunder of the place hau ' falieu ere yei it ii :d outgrow its swaddling clothes. *.V: business was suspended by spoiitaiieou, auu universal consent. The shipping, consisting oi tne .nice Roy, DuWitt, (J. C. Kerry, Gorgia, and Ine Annie Tibbet'.s, displayed their burning at half uiast. The engines ot de parting trains were draped in uiourning. The whole population seemed to have come to the tuneral at Beaufort, many Walking the whole distance. Public Meeting. A meeting of citizens was held on Thursday evening at the reading room, of which J. C. Mayo was chairman, and Geo. W. Johnson was secretary. A committee was appointed consisting oi J. G. Thompson, William Elliott Esq., and H. G. Judd, to draft resolutions in relation to the loss felt by this community in the death of S. C. Millett. S*xr (Jardozo and Ins pals of the printing ring will be attcudcd to next week. The prostration incident to the sad duties oi' the past two weeks will ex cuse delay. That Cake.
