The Colleton Treasurer.
The appointment of F. W. Snsportas
as treasurer of Colleton vice A. 0. Shaffer
vtas a surprise to every one. It was
" - L? ~V 4l.?
Understood that not a nieniuer m iuu
delegation had spoken in favor of a
change. Capt. Shaffer was known to be
a controlling element in his county, and
ho complaint was made of his private or
official acts. On Friday the senate voted
on the nomination of Sasportas and he
was rejected by a vote of twenty-two to
five. So Shaffer remains for the present.
The fact that he had been induced to resign
the office of clerk of court iu order
to take the trcasurership operated to
make his removal look like an act of
treachery and bad faith, and so secured
For him the sympathy of the senate.

GEN. XXXI.?49.
Co thou thy way ana I go mine; J
Apart yet not afar,
Only a thin veil haog* between
The pathways 'where we are.
And "God keep watch 'tween tliec and me;"
Tills is my prayer;
He looks thy way, lie looketh mine,
And keeps us near.
I kuow not where thy road may lie,
Or which way mine may he;
If mine will lead 'thro' parching sands,
And thine beside the sea;
Yet God keep watch 'tween tliee and me;
. So never fear;
lie holds thy hands, He claspeth mine,
And keeps us near. ^
Should wealth and fame pcrchanco be thine, 31
And my !ot lowly be;
Or you he lone and sorrowful,
And glory he for me; d
Yet "God keep watch 'tween thee and me,"
Both he his care ;
One arm 'round thee, and one 'round me,
Will keep us near.
I sigh some times to see thy face.
But since this may not be, "
I'll leave thee in the hands of Him
Who watches thee and me;
"I'll keep you both beneath my wings,"
* 'TIs this I hear ;
One wing o'er tlicc, and one o'er me;
80 we are near.
T
And tho' our roads be separate,
And thy way is not mine, "
Yet coining to the Mercy-seat, 0
My soul will meet with thine. fi.
And "God keep watch 'tween thee and me"
I'll whisper there. 0
He blesseth thee, lie blcsseth me; C'
And wc arc near. l
