capacity in smooth weather
After passing the lightship onTybee 11
knoll the wind came up strong from s. e.
and tore the jib in ribbons, making the ^
boat unmanageable and soon'drifted her Q
on'the shoals off Paufuskie Island. She pj
struck a bank and was thrown on her j0
beam ends. The passengers clung to the j,,
gunwale for two hours, when they com- a?
menced dropping off one aficr another ^
until all were lost but one man named tl
Mosoa Polite, who bracing himself in the jy
^ mast hole, managed to keej from being ^
washed off. The boat had in the mean ^
time rolled off the bank and diifted back ,<
towards Savannah, and at about 1 or 2
o'olock Tuesday morning this man was
picked up by a boat from Savannah at
going to Pawfuskie island. It is barely
possible that the mate, Scipio Drayton
may have been picked up, he having
drifted off on top of the cabin hatch. u!
The boat was a good one. about 40 feet ^
long, built by 0 Driseoll o.'Port lloyal, w

Habeas Corpus Case, J'!
Niles Graham was brought before CaWe*
tOD and Williams, on a writ of habeas
eorpus. The facts arc as follows, as appeared
by the testimony. The prisoner j(
was committed to jail by trial justice a
Ellis near Lawtonville on a charge of :<
theft of ten dollars from Dr. Ruddell. c
He had appeared before the justice twice u
ready for trial, aud finally demanded to
be either discharged or sent to jail. Upon ?
hie committal he applied, through his
counsel, Mr. Wuipper, for a writ of habeas
corpus. Upon the hearing the ^
prisoner was discharged from custody. /;
The Christmas Ball.
On Christmas day the weather was a
anything but conducive to merriment. 11
Dull dreary, disagreeable, drenching. G
And it seemed to save up the worst i'or
the last. From datk to midnight the
winds blew and the rains descended, and
beat upon the Sea Island hotel, without ^
mercy. Nevertheless, there was a ball, ,
and the proverb was exemplified : The
more the merrier, but the fewer, :hc "
better cheer. The dancing hall was
beautifully decorated with Cbristmna c
emb'eois, the music wa; excellent and f
those who hid braved ihe element to "?
come wc;e very glad of it, and cujoyeil ?
themselves the more that the winds i
howled without. Kingman, provided an 1
excellent supper and exerted htm. elf '
jus t as if he had pat a hundred dollars in
his pocket instead laying it out. If the
weather had hceo^air there is no dou'o- ;
but that a large company would have c
been here lrom up the road.
