the police exhibit more than their

calling the attention of Congress to
that subject. General John P. Van
Ness was called to the chair, and
Mr* Seaton appointed secretary.
Mr. Sampson delivered to the
meeting a speech of considerable
length, in his usual diffusive man-,;
ner. " To us this was an indulgences
heard him speak before ? Though
we did not know his person, and
; notwithstanding his unexpected
brogue, we recognised him at once \
by the extraordinary peculiarities
thar his first * remarks exhibited ih
common with all his printed speech- i
es i and truly we were much amu
sed, and sometimes much delighted,
with his strange repellent mixture
of pathos, humor, sublimity, and
sentimentality ; and with the fantas
tical union of negligent and elabor
ate phraseology. With his senti- i
ments we coincide entirely, j and,
indeed, we believe that only one
opinion exists at present in the coun
try, in regard to the represented
k necessity of arrangements for pla
cing our manufacturing establish
ments in a more living-like condi
tion.
