It was the geneial opinion. U.ul the dev

They have also erected furnaces to heat

??The late Season has been the most
extraorftfnary one rememb;*ied by the old
est and most observing farmer ; there has
not been a single day in which Fahrenheit's
thermometer has risen above 75 cleg. ?
_ generally u Ifr
the usual heat in Summer is from 75 to
83 deg. Our harvest of wheat has been
much below middling ; the Indian corn
has been so ^lasted that it does not ex
ceed one .tenth part of the usual crops ;
oil is absolutely anullity. The greatest
part of our grapes have dropped from the
vines ; and the remainder have not, even
yet, arrived at perfect maturity ? so that
t>ur wine will be dear, and of a very indif
ferent quality."

Fraud in ('oilori ! ! ? For the reputation of
the Slate and the Town it is our duty to
make public a gross ft\?ud \v*hirh was prac
tised upon a merchant here, an Saiuiduy
K.st, in the sale of Cotton.
A man named Bcnjaniin lirown (of
fiuilfbrri Coun'. y,) sold a bag of cotton,
which upon examination, was found to
contain One humhed and tig.'uu pounds of
S\nd. The suspicion was first excited
by a comparison of Hie weight with/ some
other bales which Blown had brought to
market. He had hawked it about for some
time, but from a suspicion the cotton was
wet, he could obtain no purchaser till night.
As soon, I (iw ever, as it was weighed and
the b.i?* ripped open, the GutKirrd gentle
man cunningly decamped leav:ng cotton,
waggon, and hotses to the mercy of ihe
public.

THURSDAY. January 30, 1817.
In ihc House of Representatives yes
terday, i lu* Compensation Law was a
gain brought on the tapis, and a debate
ensued which lasted till sunset. Messrs.
Calhoun, (irosvenor and Hopkinson* were
conspicuously eloquent. Owing to some
members from Massachusetts and other
slates having received insti uctions, almost
boidcri ur on a demand to vote for a re
peal of i his m'jnatrum fivrefitlwn* which has
excited sir much popular ? iamor, the
question -rf the right of instruction has
been agitated, which has called fojth all
the talents and energy of the house. The
Ha|l of Congi'iss has liieialiy resounded
with the eloquence of Messrs Clay, Cal
houn, < ?rosvenoi, Hardin, Hopkinson, Bar
bour, Randolph, &r. Still the bill remains
as it was. Indeed it is a question with
us whether t he present Congress ran with
strict propriety repeal the law ? All those
who voted for the increase have declared
that they acted from the purest intentions
of heart, and not without mature delibera
tion, how then can they cousis ently tome
forward und say notwithstanding all this
we will vote for its repeal in obediefice to
the wishes of our constituents*' If solne
of the districts should bye and bye think
the compensation too small and wish it cn
crea^ecK would It not place the Con^res of
the United State* in rather an Utfly pre
dicament. In Other countries if they
should see such proceedings would they
not vay the American Conjures was the
weathercock of popular clamor* For our
parts we readily acknowledge that power
emanates from the people, and we hold
the vox** fiofiuK sacred as the vnx <teiy yet
we m it t suy that it woultU^ive us heartfelt
concern it the Legislators of this Repub
lic would let local- interests interfere with
great national concerns ; or to see them
yield their immunities, or sacrifice their
ideas of ri^ht and justice upon the fliiysy
altar of popularity. We do not profess to
b?^ prophets, but we will almost venture to
assert that the bill will remain in statu r/uo
for the members of next Congress to acton.
