in the healing art, although they maintain
a i expectable standing among the different
articles of our materia mcdica. The com
mon dogwood or Cninus foriJa, is one of
the most common trees tl at we luoe. It
glows tu the height ol irom sixteen to
eighteen feet, and is generally known as
an excellem tonic among all classes.
I might go on tocnumera'e many other
indigenous plants, but snail content myself
>*ith observing that we meet with the iive
oak and palmetto nem the -ea coast. The?
former grows to a very considerable size,
?.nd is extremely uselul in ship building.
It is generally overhung with a species of
moss which flourishes in low moist situa
tions, said o be indicative ol insalubrity.
The palmetto glows to an immense height,
perfectly streight and without a limb until
you arrive at the top, when it branches out.
Its texture is apparently 'Hpongoid or re
ticular. It resists the decomposing effects
of water, and is very useful in the con
struction of forts. When struck by a ball
it is not fractured like other wood, but sut
lers the ball to enter and closes again.
Water for chinking, and domestic purpos
es, is* obtained from wells sunk -to the
depth of twenty, thirty and forty feet. It
improves as you advance in'o the country.
1 hat obtained in Charleston, and along
the coast is unpleasantly brackish. Those
who visit the city pnd low count ty, from
the upper part of the state, labour under
the greatest inconvenience from it. In
si ort it is frequently an exciting cause ol
oisease. The wealthier class of inhabi
tants in Charleston, take advantage of
lain, hy collecting, it in reservoirs or cis
terns as it descends from the eaves of their
houses. It is evident however, that water
th uncollected independent of stagnation is5.
rendered additionally unwholesome hy the
letention of every impuiity lodged on the
tops of those houses, and collected from
that stratum of air, hing next the earth.

We have to peiform the melancholy I
task of announcing the decease of bis ex
cellency GFa>RGK M \l)lVv)N, govern
or of misstate lie died on Mond ty lu- 1
at Paris, Bourbon county, where he had
been several weeks confined by a pamfui
illness. We shall not attempt to pouriray
the character of this amiable man ; his vu
tues and patriotism are too well known to
need eulogium. His whole life was devoted
to the service of his corn try ? The corspicu
ous station to which he had been recently
Chosen by the unanimous voice of his fel
low-ci izens, amply testifies his worth.
Inconsequence of the above distressing
event, the government w ill be administered
by Gabriel Slaughter Lieutenant
( Governor, for four years. The Coiisitu
tion djes not provide for a new election.

Corn ? It has been discovered
that Corn can be obtained trom St.
Domingo, - if it should become ex
tremely scarce in the United States.
Some importations have already
been made at this place and even in
Connecticut. At first it could be
obtained at 50 cents a bushel, but
on the 'demand increasing, the price
advanced considerably. The grain
is smaller than ours, yellow, and
of an excellent quality ? and it 4s
said three crops can be r^i ed in
one yearin that island.
