Mark Twain tella tlio following story, related by a follow passenper, who, being banterod about liis timidity, said lie had nefcr been scared sincoho loaded an old Queen Anne's musket for his father onco, whereupon ho gircs tho following! " Yon see, tho old man was trying to learn mo to shoot blackbirds and boosts that toro np tho young corn and such things, so that I could bo of somo uso about tho farm, because 1 wasn't big enough to do much:. My gun was a singlo barrelled shot-gun, and the old man carried an old Queen Anno musket that weighed a ton, mado a report like a thunder-clap, and kickea liko a inulo. Tho old man wanted mo to shoot tho musket sometimes, but I was atraid.? Ono day, though, I got hor down 1 .. T 1 ... A _ si 1 1 aim so i iook ner 10 uio uirou man, and asked him how to load her, hccauso it was out in the field.? 44 Hiram," said ho, "do you seo these marks on the stock, an X and a V on each sido of the Queen's crown ? Well, that means ten halls and five slugs?that's her load." " But how much powder ?" " Oh," ho says, 44 it don't mat or; put in thrco or four handfulls." So I loaded her np that way, and it was an awful chargo?I had sense enough to seo that, and start* ed out. 1 levelled her on a good many blackbirds; but every timo T wont to pull the trigger I shut my oyes and winked . I was afraid of her kiokv Towards sundown I fbtched up at'tlio house, and thcro was the old man resting on the porch. 44 Been out hunting, havo ye?" 44 Yos, sir," say8 I. 44 What did you kill?" 44 Didn't kill anything, sir? didn't shoot her off?was afraid sho would kick, (I know blatno well sho would.") "Giinmio that gun?" the old man said, as mad as sin. And ho took aim at a sapling .1- - il - C .1- J . vii iiiu < iiicr hiuu ui iiiu ruuu, an i 1 began to drop back out of danger. And tho noxt moment I heard tbo oarthquako, and hoard tho Qneon Anno whirling end over end in tho air, and father spinning around on ono heel with ono leg up and both hands on his jaw, and the bark flying from that old. sapling like there was a hail storin. The old man's shoulder was sot back three inches, and his jaw turned black and bine, and he had to lay np thrco days. Cholo ra nor nothing else can ever scare mo the way I was scared that time. A max who had sovoral anprcn ticos was accustomed to food them quite largely on bean soup. This was all well onongh at first, but after a little- while, with each sue cesaive soup, a smaller number ol beans appeared. Ono day at ta bio, after the good man had said grace over it, a la Squcors, ono ol tho boys, after a scrntinizing exam* ination of tho dish, was seen suddenly to rise from his chair, and comtncnco to strip. " What arc you about there, Tom 1" exclaimed the master. 44 Goin* to dive lor a bean 1" was the reply. -e ? m m Tub Columbus Enquirer says: At a calico party down town, the other night, a#clcrk of one of oui grocery stores made his entree in two-story " beav." A young plasterer, wishing to show his wit, accosted the bee gum wearer with " Eh, (J , out trying to hive bees, are vout" "Yes, said G., w but don't want any dirt-dobbers." That chap was chawed. That was not a bad hit by a wag coming to* town in an omnibus, who, seeing bis friend bow to an extremely corpulent man, asked who he was. " That, sir, is Smith, the great corporation contractor." 44 Ah, indeed I lie looks more like a corporation expander P i / T Tins Columbia correspondent ol the Charles** OonrVer says: There is every reason to believe that important changes are soon to tako place in the railroad system of the State. The presence in Columbia of a nomber of capitalists, and the purchase by them and by thoir agents ot the stock of the Greenville Railroad, the secrecy with which their operations liavc been planned and condncted, and tho fact that they have absorbed, say 20,000 shares ot the stock ol that corporation; at little less than fl.rn/k /^rvllMA* ? ? f vv wviimo pui Biime, are evidences ot a determination to use tbis important line for some signal pnrposo. What that pnrpoeo ia lias not yet been fully developed, but wo believe enough has transspired to show that these parties intend to control tho most important link of tho DIuo Ridge Kailroad. This stock must, therefore inevitably appreciate in . value whonovor tho Western connections aro complete. In that Grconville Railroad Company, the Stnto is interested to the extent of about ono-third ol its stock, say 25,000 shares; and tho city of Charleston is interested to the amonnt of ono-sixth of the stock. Tho two, therefore, may exert a controling influence in moulding tho destinies of tho road, and directing its bonefits in the proper channel. Is this likely to bo done ? So far as tho city oi Charleston is concornod, President Magrath, of the South Carolina Railroad, has, wo believe, placed himself in such rotations to the capitalists, as will protect tho interests ot this community. In other words, if it is contemplated by tho purchasers of tho Greenville Railroad to continue the lino to Asheville and on through tho Blue Ridge, or to carry forward the Blue Ridge Railroad already begun, Charleston will bo to this end of the lino what Cincinnati or St. Louis may become at tbo other end. t? i i * ? ii. una uccn iearcu mat mo owners of tlio Wilmington and Manchester nnd the Wilmington and Woldon Railroads were at tho bottom of a conspiracy to purchase the Greenvillo . Railroad, and its branches to Spartanburg and Laurens, for tho pnrposo of diverting all the trado of that region over 1 their own roads?thus coming in competition with thoChnrlotteand Columbia and tho South Carolina Railroads This suspicion was strengthened, by tho tact that engineers are at once to commence the work of survey, between Sum ter and Columbia, preparatory to building a line that shall eonueet tho upper portion of thcStatewith rival corporations and rival cities. But tho assurance has boen given, that tho solo and only purpose of tho capitalists rcforrcd to is tc purchase tho Greenvillo Road as tho beginning of a trunk line ' through to tho West. It is stated, furthermore, that thoy are backed by immense capital, a portion ol which uriH bo exponded in putting tho Greenville lload in thorough repair, building now engines and cars, nnd making it a first class institution. Mcauwhilo. thev nrn 1 poao to push energetically forward ; towards tho monntains ; and they ' express tho belief that, in less than three years, thcro will bo a rail 1 way to the great West that will ! open and expand into now chan neU the riches of two sections oi 1 the Union.
