Benjamin Fitzpattlek.
Tho telegraph has already an'
!i on need tho death of ?s-Bfoptqa
and ox-Govornor Benitonin Fit?
patrick, which occurred on Sunday
fast, at his rosidence hi 'Elmore
county, Alabama. He was born
in Georgia, June. 1&02, and emigrated,
with an elder brother, to
Alabama in 1815. He studied
law, and in 1821 was admitted to
the bar. Hot long after he engaged
in praotice lie was elected
State Solicitor of his judicial distiict,
and sorved till 1829, having,
in 1835, been re-elected, la this
position he made reputation and
became auite popular with the
people. Upon the expiration of
his Becond terra the precarious
state of lib health necessitated his
declination of a re flection, and, in
fact, the entire abandonment ot the
legal profession. 'Purchasing a
plantation near Wetumpka, be devoted
his labors to planting, at the
same time taking an active and
conspicuous part in the politic* > of
the State. In 1840 be was chosen
a Presidential elector on tire Democratic
ticket, and voted for Van
Burcn. During fho year following
(1811) he was elected Governor
oi Alabama, and his administration
gave the people so mnch
satisfaction, that, in 1818, he was
re-elected. In 1815 ho retired
from public life, and remained in
seclusion until the election of Senator
lving, as Vice President, in
1852, when Governor Collier appointed
him to fill the vacaf ^
In 1855, when the term of die deceased
Senator expi^d, Mr. Fitzpatrick
was chos^a Senator bj the
Legislatero the term ending in
1861. Jdo was president pro tern.
ot tliolSonato dhring the ThirUflflh
Congress, the death of Mr.
King having left the vice presidency
vacant.
The career of Mr. Fitzpatrick
in tho Senate was very quiet, although
ho was a practical and energetic
legislator. In February,
1861, ho withdrew and returned to
his homo in Alabama.
We ought to have stated that he
was nominated on tho Presidential
ticket with Mr. Douglass, as Vice
President, in 1860, Diit declined
the honor. During the war he re
mained quietly at homo; though
his sympathies were all with his
people in their great struggle, he
took no active part in it, remaining
quietly on bis plantation. After
the close of the war ho was
elected to tho constitutional convention
called under President
Johnson's plan of reconstruction,
and was chosen its president. The
speech he iqade on taking the chair
wuct-Ary conciliatory. The labors
of tho convention over, Mr. Fitz^
patrick returned to lite
irom which lie never after omergcd.
The despatch announcing bis
death reports that the Legislature
adjourned until yesterday. His
funeral took place Tuesday at
Montgomery.?Richmond Enqui*

Swkdisu Immigrants for South
Carolina.?Tho Charleston News,
of yesterday, says:
"Mr. W.J. Fcrlow, who was
eoine time ago appointed one of
fho immigration agents of the
State, and who, for many months
past, has been diligently at work
in the North of Europe to tnrn a
portion of the tide of immigration
toward South Carolina, arrived irt
this city yesterday from Maimo,
Sweden, bringing with him twenty
six Swedish immigrants, mostly
farmers, masons and carpenters.
The new comers all expect to select
homes in the interior of oor
State."
Mr. Fcrlow says that ho can induce
the immigration of any number
of Swedes, Danes and Germans
to South Carolina, If planters
w ho desire such laborers will
co opcrato with him by advancing
a portion of tho passage money.
buautrkul Though t.?Forty
yeais oiico seemed a long and weary
pilgrimage to tread. It now
seems but a step. And yet along
the way are broken shrines where
a thousand hopes have wasted into

their drifting dust: green mounds
