Song of 8team.
[The following fine poem, by Ueorge W. Cut- *
tor, of Co/ingtoo, Kentucky, Blackwood has (
pronbuuceJ " ths best lyric of tho country/'J ^
Harness mo down with your iron hands,
Bo sure of your curb and roin,
For I scorn the strength of your puny hands, 1
As a tempest soorns the chain I j
How I laughed as I lay concealed from sight,
For many a couutless hour,
At the childless boast of human might,
And the prido ot uumau power ; t
When I saw an army upon the land,
A* navy upon the soas,
Creeping along, a snail-like band,
Or waiting a wayward breeiC )
When I saw a peasant reel
With the toil he faintly boro,
As he turned at the tardy wheel, ?
Or toiled at the weary oar. .
When I measured the panting courser's speed,
The flight of the carrier dove,
As they boro a law a king decreed,
Or the lines ol impatient love?
I could but think how the world would feci,
As tbeso were outstripped afar, I
When I should be bound to the rushing keel,
Or chained to the flying car.
Ifa ! ha ! ha! they found mo at last!
And they invited nio forth at length, J
And I rushed to my throue with a thunder blast
And laughed in my iron strength!
Ob, then ye saw a wondrous cliango .
On the earth and ocean wide?
Where now my flery armies rango, '
Nor wait for wind or tido. 1
Hurrah ! hurrah ! the water o'er
The mountain steep decline ; C
Time?space?have yielded to my power ; q
The giant streams ol tho queenly west,
And tho orient floods divine.
Tho ocean pales where'er I sweep,
To hear my strength rejoice?
And tho monsters of tlio briny deep
Cower trembling at my voico.
1 carry tho wealth and ore of earth,
The thought of tho godlike mind?
Tho wind lags alter my going forth,
The lightning is left behind.
Tn tho darksomo depths of the fathomless
mi no
My tireless arm doth play,
Where the rocks ne'er saw the sun's decline,
Or the dawn of tho glorious day.
I bring earth's glittering jcwols up
From the bidden caves below,
And I make the fountain's granito cup
With a crystal gush o'crflow. ^
I blow tho bellows, I forge tlie steel,
In nil the shops of trade?
I hammer the oar and turn the wheel, (
Where my arms of strength nrc inado ;
I manago the furnace, the mill, tho mint,
I carry, I spin, I weave? f
And nil my doing I put in print
On every Saturday evo.
?vo no muscle to weary, no broast to decay,
No bcnci to'be " laid on the shelf."
A'nd soon f intend yon may " go and play," '
While I manage the world myself j
Rut harness mo down with your iron bands?
lie suro of your curb and rein,
For I scorn the strength of your puny hands '
As the tempest scorns a chain !
Arrest of Highly Respectable Citi- i
zens?Outrages of the Sheriff and i
Constabulary Force. 1
Some twclvo or fifteen of the roost honest,
industrious, peaceable and respectable of our
citizens were brought to town under arrest last
week by Scott's armed (so-called) constables.
Not tho slightest attempt was made by any of
the parties either to escupo or resist their arrest.
Notwithstanding this, tho houses of
some of our most venorablo citizens?grayheaded,
unattending, and high in tho esteem
and confidence of the community?were rudely,
roughly and violently entered without cause,
and ransacked, even throughout tho private
apartments, from top to bottom. In this vile
outrage, the negro constable who accompanied
tho party was the only member of it who exhibited
either tleccncy or respect. A detail of
these things would stir the blood and quicken
tho pulso of every respectable man in tbc
State; but wo forbear.
When the arrested parties were bronglit in!o
town, the shcrifr of tho county, usurping cnt
rely tho functions of the magistrate, stood
over the desk of that officer, anil in insulting
tones and manner, without authority or warrant
iu law, dictated as to every bondsman,
rejecting some of our most respectable and
responsible citizens, after having ordered "excessive
bail " in the sum of $1,000, and directing
that each party should give 2 distinct bonds
for that amount. Ana tnis wasuone, when the
fact is notorious that offenders of bis own party,
timo and again, have been released on
bonds insignificant in amount, which were not
worth tho paper upon which thoy wcro written
; and in tho face of tho still more glaring
and outrageous fnct, that his offisial bond, as
surety for the thousands of the people's money
he handles, was good for little or nothing. This
man?ot whose outrage of our people columns
could be written?if wo may judge from his
course, certainly realizes tho intenso odium in
which ho is irrevocably held by the mass of
tho respectability of tho county.
This indiscriminate arrest of our best citizens,
upon the merest suspicion, is a terrible
abuse of power, nnd violation of the principles
of liberty, even as professed by the party,
ami certainly will not be sustained by tho better
class of Republicans. We have been pleased
to lonrn, and wo take pleasure in making
aiown tho laet, that a large number of the
-nore intelligent of tho colored people do not
sympathize with this action of tho Stato Government.?Sumter
Watchman.

A Suspicious Character.
On Monday night last, a yonng man who
gave his name az "Thompson," called at I
the Livery Stable of A. W. Thompson of this n
town to have his mule fed. Tho party came ^
in after dark and said he wanted to go ten

ted himself as coming from the direction of
Clarkeaville, Ga. After remaining a short ?

would like to sell him his mule, and as their
names were the same he knew they could |
trade. He asked #200for hia mula, but fell
to #150. and on being asked if ho would not
take $145 for the mule, bridle and saddle,
replied "'yes, though it looked like giving
