The Oroat Disaster at the AVondala Cost!
Mines, Pennsylvania.
One of those awful occurrences to which
eoal mines are subject, befel the miners in the
Avondale Mine. On tha 7th September, 108
men and boys were in the mine when the
wooden materials at tho entrance eaught fire,

off all escape. Two daring men from the outside,
when the fire was supposed to be sufficiently
extinguished, attempted to descend into
the mine to explore it in hopes of affording relief
to the sufferers, and they too were sulfonated.
All hop* of saving the miners, shut up
n the deep recesses of the mine, was therefore
abandoned. Explorations on the 0th and 10th
of September disclosed the dreadful fate of the
suffocated men and boys whose bloated remains
hare been exhumed. The cries of the widows
and orphans of the efcHms were heartrending,
and succeeefnl appeals for pecuniary aid to
those unfortunates harg been successfully met
in the greet eitlee of the North, and we are
gratified to learn that Charleston is also doing
her part in the work of charitable relief. We
expect to lay befora cur readers a more detailed
account of this mournful occurrence.
