Editora? We have had' a moat extraordinary io<1 diHitraui Spring. Tit* 18th February saw our (ruit tiees in full bloom, th? day* warm and pleasant, and the evening* soft and mild ai an Italian armaria*, and as the abode* of night lowered yon night hear the reverberating aonnds of lowing cattle and eong* of laboring freedmen, with those of birds and a thousand other mellowing aonnde meat agreeable to the ear, and produeing a mellowness ot thought and feeling delightful to the senses. The morning's sun welcomed the laborer to his fields, and nil wera in bigh glee to plant an early crop of eorn, that ura mivlit oat readv for that mora profitable staple, cotton?at least far mora ao at pros :nt prices. Dot our hopes have indeed been ' nipped in the bud." Morn ng after morning has been succeeded by the heaviest frosts, and col l rains, sleets, a little snow, and then again heavy hall atoroas with thunder and lightning, have succeed-d each other in quick succession, until every vestige of spring disappeared, and a new winter, as it were, set in upon us. For two weeks past there has teen nothing but rain, lain, aud the heaviest falls of it I ever saw, until the whole face of the earth is so saturated with watfrthnt millions of wet weather springs are bursting from tlio earth, and every kind ot la bor on the farm entirely suspended.? Neither ploughs nor wagons can be run indeed a mule cannot walk across the fields without hogging down, until it is now getting so lAte that an incalculable injury mus1 be done the planting interest. The whole month of March has been literally lost to the laborer ; which must necessnri'.y throw the planting of the crop a month behind hand, as this month is emphatically n month of preparation for the seed This ito be deeply regretted on ninny accounts, but more particularly as the freedmen gen erally are not woiking as well this, ss Inst spring, as I nm iufonutd by the old planters. Several causes, perhaps, contribute to this, but more especially the high prices obtained for cotton this season, which hue filled the pockets of all those who labored faithfully last year with "greenback*," which render* them independent for the lime being, ana until mm, or most 01 mis at least, is expended, you know Uieir na lure well enough to know that not much Inbor will be done, except by a few prudential individuals among?t them. However, they and their money pait company very rapidly, and it would astonish you, Messrs, Editors, to see aud know how well some ol them live?what tables lliey set 1 as I am in foitncd, for I have not seen llieiu mysolf.? Hut when we remember colion bus beer twenty-five and thirty cents per pound, and it is no unusual thing by any meant for a good band to make bis ten bales here, weighing each five hundred pounds, ii should not surprise us that they live well, especially when we lemembcr their fond n?-se fur good eating. Hut enough ol Sambo in the present letter. I only wish h* was as induslrioua as his own and the in. terests of the country demand; aud il would greatly advantage all of us. I have nothing to write you from hers of a political character, having long since as you know eschewed politics ; however, in that respect, the people of this State are unquestionably the most quiet of any I ev r saw ? the But ject is scarcely ever mentioned. This is owing, perhaps, to several causes, amongst them the kind aud impar i.l ...i. .r n.._ r-sii .l ,i... ?? ! IUIU VI UVII. Ull'rni, I?uu Hit* I1ICW llim Jn forme J'eats the people were divided li>lo parties. As an election approached, party linos were drawn, (lie party spur ami whip applied for awhile until it was over when all again subsided into pence and quiet, and remained so until just previous to the next. However, this is not the case now, for there are emphatically no purlitt Dow, but one solid phalanx ; the entire people all agreeiug and thinking alike, scarcely without exception. In my former letters descriptive of the country, I neglected to ruen'-ion or describe two great curiosities, not uncommon, t" wit : The numerous Indian mounds and buffalo licks. The former are very nnnier one in certain localities, and their size (at least 8?>me of th-m) tiuly enormous. I have scan one, a little mountain iiself, near the small town of Baterville, on the Mississippi and Tennessee Railroad, which looks as if it might contain the bones cf a dozen tribes, numbering tens of thousands. Thesa mounds are frequently covered with the loftiest trees and of the most immense size, and do beyond doubt contain (lie bones of Indians; and some noj-ert of Animate likewise, and they loo of a most gigantic size and species, as many allege.? Re this as it may, prove what they will, the mounds, as stated, are numerous end immensely large In many instances. Rut the huflulo licks were a greater curiosity to me than the Indian mounds. They are not ao numtioui. but lliev too are covered now with heavy forest timber, and in niany in* stances of large six* and beauty?straight as an arrow, and smooth as they well can be, frequently reaching to great height hefpje n branch or liinb is sent forth. The lick has the appearance of an excavation leit or twenty feel deep in some instances, M ajor Bnrringer, formerly of North Carolina, but who haa been a permanent settle! here for last twenty-five or thirty years told me that one of these licks covering probably fifteen or twenty acre* of ground in La Fayette County (adjoining this) was wliea lie firat came to this country, at least twenty feet deep ; but it has now filled up until, I suppose, an average of oight or ten feet briow tbe rurface surrounding it, it about the depth of tlie excavation?an ex cavation made hy hnffiilo tongues I Just think of that, Messrs. Editors. This samr lick, which 1 have par?eJ a d'zen or more T N 1 .3 liaWr,no?r hi* heavy timber jroelw all ?v?r lU Thcve lirka furnish the UiIimI evidence that the eaith contain* ealtne or mineral <l.p<.?ii? of tone ki?4 II?wever, the evidence of this met it so abundant that it Joetreajiet room for the shadow of a doubt, and the quantity of litnt is ao great that It ia visible to the naked eye all over the faee of the earth ; and the large number of mineral walla in the eonntry with alum pi (dominating, shows that thy water ia intpregnabd on all hand*. Indeed, if the mineral ei-Ui wrro destroyed, it would be a very difficult matter to obtain, ev. n witli the aid of eieterne. a rnfficicnt xopply of water for diink and culinary purpose-.? They doubtless contribute too. largely, to the hra'th of tl>e eonntry. I know mine has benefitted my own health great!), al though it disagrees with aeveral members of my family, who pr?fer the freestone ter. not nenr ao eool and refreshing to the laata whilst drinking it. In regard to ?bc amusements of the country, they are not very numeroua outside the social circle ; still there are enough perhaps for the lime the planting class have to devote to them. There is small game, such aa birds, turkey, duck, rabbit, squlrr.-l ' o'pos'iim, fox and wild eat, innumerable^ ' and deer enough for the huntsman to bring 1 one or two home almost every " drive.*"? ' There are also a few black bear, but it ia rarely one is caught or killed out-ida ni the Tallahatchie or Mississippi River swamps, or ennebrakes. A few aflernoona sinee a couple of young ladies at my house took a notion to have art evening's ride ol n mile or two. On passing beyond the ' head of my avenue, soine ha'f mila from the house, a very largo grey fox leaped into the road in forty or fifty paces of them, turned round, rais'ng his head and tail in a very saucy manner, locked at them a few moment* and galloped off; hut by this t:me the young ladi-s hnd turned their ho<sea' beads and were galloping much more furiously towards my gate, v-ry firm ly under the impression that they had nnr rnwly escaped tlie attack of a large grey teo//. lint a morning or t*ro alter I had the ptea-uro of listening to a fine pack o| honnds chase hia foxship (or some other) foi ati hour or two. It is rare that tl e fox< hunter fails to have his chase, whenever lis chooses to turn out for the purpose. The ootnmon wild cat is quite numerous, ami in some localities troublesome and niieehiev ous, in destroying pigs, lambs, io., but the benvir is perhaps more mbchievous; that is, in injuring tlie hums by bur rowing snd building dams, than all the otii er wild nuimals together. They are fai more numerous than I have ever known tlu m in any other country, and I hnvi seen some very fine pieces of land literally ruined by their extensive borrowings and dam building, tlooding the fields. They are caught by Itapping in large nr.tnberi every winter, but it dors not se> ni to de. crei.se them at all. One ? f my nearest neighbors, Mr. Goodnight, lias caught som? eight, or ten this winter, one of then weighing fifty-three pounds n?t'?tin largest I have ever known. My sheet ii exhausted and I must now close, nod it wi) in all probability be some week' before ] find material enough again to indite auoih er letter, utiles* something unexpected hap pens. 1 hope in my next, to he aide to giv? you a cheering account of the prospect o fine crops, good seasons, diligent laborers Ac.
