The future President baa one of tbe moat

Gkksrii. Cuwitmo's Mission.?The treaty
amide by tlencral Cushiug with the Government
of Colombia concedes to the United
Ptates tho exclusive right to construct an
intcr-oceanic canal across the Isthmus of
Darien, at any poiut which may bo selected
by tho United States. The Colombian Oovernmcnt
cedes aix miles of land on each side
of the canal, one-half for its own benefit and
tho other for that of tho party .undertaking the
construction of tho work. The Colombian
Government is to rScetfe ten per cent, of the
net income for tho first ten years, and after
tho canal is paid for, twenty five per cent, of
the net profits. The treaty is to be rat ficd by
the 'United States within ten months, and the
surveys are lobe made within two-years after
tho ratification.
The canal is to be begun within five years
and fanlahed within fiftoen years after the
calification, otherwise tho chnrtcr fatis. Tho
charter runt for one buudred years. Tho
riinai is to be under tho control ot tho United
'States, and Congress con fix the rato of tolls.
The navigation is to be open to all nations in
dime of peace, but closed to belligerents who
enny seek to avail thcuisulvcs of its advantages.
It is estimated the canal will cost
$11)0,000,000. A company was not long ago
organiiod in New York, under a charter of
that State, with Peter Cooper as President.
It is -said, on distinguished authority, that
this rnmianv has the omtital. and is ready to
commenco tho work. Congress, however, is at
liberty to give the preference to this or to any
other private company, or the United States
ran itself undertake tho construction of tho
eanal.

VIakkst.?The Wow York H'orM says:
The Revolution in Cuba and the abolition
of slavery on that Island are likely to hitvo
an important effect upon this country. Raw
wttgnrs have advanced one cent, per pound in
lliis market since Monday, and tho present
yricea may ho regarded as fully two cents
riighor than wonhl ho obtained bad Cuba regained
tranquil. This advanoo in prices,
with r prospect of a still further advance, will
undoubtedly greatly stimulate the production
of sugar in ^Louisiana as well as in other sugargrowing
districts of the earth; and we fortunately
have a liberal stock on band for this
stsge of tho season. Stocks of "sweets" in
this country -aro probably fully twice as large
as they au.ro one year ago. The riso comes
early onougls, also, to have its effect upon the
jiroduotion of maple sugar and sorghum. Tho
Jiigher cost will likowiso limit consumption.
These facts must all no taken .into the account
in considering tho future of the sugar market.
With tho increased home production and tho
diminished importation which appear to be in
prospeet, the Federal treasury will lose largely
fr?m a corresponding lulling off In tho duties
on imports, and it becomes a practical question
of present interest whether a reduction in tho
Variff on sugar is not necessary-to-prevent a
total lose of roreuuo 'herefrom, and a aerious
Vurden upon tho people to the advantage of
speculators only.

44 GrniUm*n?At your request, I state that I
used Napes' Nitrogeoixod Super-Phosphate of
Lima at the rate of I AO pounds per acre, in
the drilL with cotton Inst spring; and to test
I Its fertilising qualities fully, I left two rows
through the centre of a nine acre field, to which
I applied no stimulant. The growth of the
" weeds " (cotton plant) is, perhaps, a fourth
larger whoro the Phosphate was applied ; but
its wondortul afleoi is most slearly manifested
in the production. The cotton where tbu
Phosphate was spoiled has not only matursd
tnuch earlier than in the rows planted without
manure, but the product, as any one may see
by riding to ray farm, ia increased hy it from
throe to four-fold. I also tried puru Peruvian
Guano on ootton, 1A0 pounds to the acre, and
the success of Mapes' Phosphate is tbu year
far superior to it.
44 Respectfully yours.
