The Pictorial Prayer-Bock.
or OEORCK PAHKI560X.
It was many a long year ago, nnd
the scene of my story is the office of one
of the most* respectable notaries in
Taii?, Monsieur Dubois, a man" of the
old school, universally respected for hi*
good sense, probity and benevolence
There were present (beside lite notary
himself) a lady of middle age, richly
dressed ; she could never have been
handsome, but peibaps had her countenance
been less proud and disdainful,
she wotihl not have appeared as she
did?positively ugly ; an insignificant
looking little man; and a woman, very
shabbily dressed, who sat at seme die
tanco from the other*, hbldirfg the hand
of a beautiful little boy.
44 iler death was rather sodden,*'.said
Mad. Muranville. the richly-clad lady,
to the little man in black.
" Yes," replied he, c>?olly; "but, no
doubt, she was well prepared."
" Have you any idea of the contents
of the will ?"
44 Not the slightest : but we shall soon
know. Dubois will open it directly,"
44 Pmv, w ho is that shabl>\-looking
woman! What business can she have
here ! "
44 Ob, don't you know her ! It is the
run-away niec?, Marie, who made such
a disgraceful match some years ago,
with a lieutenant in the aimy ? a man
of low birth."
44 I wonder she has the nrsurance to
come inlo.car presence."
41 So do I; the more so, because our
deceased relative, good, pious woman
as she was, ntusl have looked upon her
disobedienco and ingratitude with horror."
At that moment, Marie approached
the speakers; she w as yet scarcely in
middle age. but soirow had beef, beforehand
with time in robbing hei
check of its bloom, and her eyes of
thi-ir lustre.
"Tray, wbal brings you bere? " said
Madame Moranville. haughtily.
Madame," replied the poor widow,
44 I am trot come to inteifete with your
rights; 1 know 1 have deserved nothing
from tny aunt hut Iter pardon, and
that I hope to hear she has left me."
" What!'' ciied Madame Mori nville,
"pardon to roO, the disgrace of youi
family, who ll?*d from the prolecliqn of
your aunt?the beta of aunts?with n
K w fellow"
"Madame, I acknowledge rity fault:
J have been ungrateful and dianli^dieul
?I know it ; but my stifleiing* have
been so great, that 1 hope Heaven lu?*
pardoned me, for I have looked opuii
the loss of my hiii-hand, and the jioverty
and sorrow attendant upon it, as a
pi n aliment from above."
"And you deceived
" Crase these reproaches, niadame,"
said the nrtarv, in a stern tone; "yonr
cousin's fault is not so very giicvous as
to call for them."
"But why should she Insult us with
her presence?"
u She hns a tight to be here," replied
the notary. " bhe comes at my desire."
He then proceeded to read the will,
in which, after ihe usual pi earn hie, tin
deceased divided her piopertv into thiee
parts. The first was composed of a
sum of ?8,000 in the hands of the
notary; the second cf a furnished
country seat of ihe same value, and
t some family jewel*; the third of an
illustrated praver-book. The will then
proceeded as follows:
"I de/sre that my property may he
divided into three lots; the fir?.t to he
?8,000; the second, the chateau, fur"
niiure and jewels; the third, my prayer
book, which is still in the same staie as
when I took it with me in tho emigra
lion in the Reign of Terror. I pardon
my niece, Maiie, for the sorrow ..he has
caused me; and, as a proof of my sin
eerily, I mention her in my will. Mv
beloied cousin, Madame Moranville,
will have the firs? choice; mv brother*
in-law, Monsieur D'Arleniont, the se
cond, and Marie the last." ?
"Ah, my sh?ter?in-lawr was a sensible
woman," ciied Monsieur D'Ai lemon t.
"Yes," said Madame Moramille, tittering;
"she has given a proof of it;
Mario will only hnvp the prater-book." j
The notary, who seemed scarcely able )
to contain his indignation, inleri npted
the titterer. '* What lot do you choose, '
. madame!" said he.
The ?8,000."
M You are determined on thai ?"
" Most undoubtedly."
M Madame Moranville, yon are lich, ' (
and your cousin is \ery ? very poor ; J(
cannot you leave this lot. and lake the
prayer-hook, that this?this?" he
seemed for a moment at a I s? for an
expression?"this strange will ha>- put ,

riird Madame Mutant ille; "or don't I
you see that my honored cousin ha* j
made her will in the express intention >

"And what do you conclude from
thatl* !
* I conclude that she desired Iter i I
niece should understand that prayer
and repentance were the onlv succors i
she ought to expect in this life. Ah, | <
she was a sail.t, that tlcar to man." .
"Saint, quotha!" cried the notary,
indignantly; " in.iv Heaven defend ine

Fhe took the book, and pressing it
to her lipa. held it to her son, who
cried out with childish delight at the
sight of lit richly gilt cover, " Oh,
matnma, let me have it."
44 Yes, my boy, you shall have if; it
will be the only legacy I can leave yon

The notary turned away bis head.
44 I>on't go, Madame Le Fevre," said
he, 44 I must speak to yon, by and by."
At that moment, the boy, in playing
with the book, unclasped it, and cied
out, 44 Oh, mamma, look at the pret'y

with this nice thin paper t'4

His mother looked ? sbo uttered n
