| Sam's Monkey.
1 '-'JPam himself was a rather bad boy,
: \nW hi* monkey ?nn worse. Here is a
j partial li-t of hi* pranks?
? Voe know, when yo<i left, lf?? creatnre
was quite shy.and still, and w.ould
bnrdlv nn.ve or cat. In lite morning,
lie Mill seemed so harmless and depress*
?d that 1 allowod Sain lo leave him un
, [ eha'nod when he went to school, think
!* i ing ho trould M mo'?. at home if he
walked ahonl'a little. Accordingly he
^ did walk about, but veiy slowly and
i sbvly. He seethed to take a fancy to
Jioxy, and though |>be bated hitn, followed
her about closely wjhde she gave
J) waiter bHih, and afterward washed
so-no laeos in the bath-room basin.?
Ijtm wuh hu uuiiitHii) ? i.-t3 nnu
Hitontive that we nil laughed, nnd felt
more kind'V toward iiicu. j
15y and by I went down flairs, leaving
liiin nslcep in a patch of sunlight ,
on the plny roPm floor, while Roxy and
Dot a were sitting, as usual, in the nursery
close by. 1 had hardly been down
half an hour when piercing screams
fiom Dorfi made me run up again. O
tncha scene ! The perfidious monkey,
in imitation of Iloxy'a performances,
l ad collected all the dolls fiom the b?
bv bouse, thrown them into the bathtub,.and
turned on the water, besides
putting, to soak in the basin a pile of
' JWa'a freshly-ironed while aprons,
which Rnxy had left a moment on a
S| eh air. 1'oor Poih'b grief, as she pulled
her drenched dollies out of their bath,
was exlietuD. The china ones wete unhurt,
except as to their dresses ; but ihe
laige painted one wns a melancholy
i spectftofC; the black of her hair and
the red of her chopk? bad iun all over
i her face, t^nd ruined her white frock.?
I could think of nothing but a savage
I in his war paint ; while the favorite
"ax lady, with real hair, was painfully
p . like a drowned kitten. Roxy's wrath
was laud nnd long. *1 be monkey fled
| ' beforo it, and did not re-appear till din
nor time.
I'm sorry to say that Sam only
laughed till he cried when be heard of
the ruin Jocko had wrought. Rut be
fore night he realized that mischief was
not always so amusing. I allowed liirn
j to take the monkey cut for a walk, on
condition lie did not lose him or allow
him out of lus sight for n moment.?
For a while all went well. Jocko made
plenty of sport, pelting the boys with
acorns, riding on Ponto. etc., hut at
last they grew tired of him, chained
him In (he f. nre mwl umiiRerl lliem
reives l>y skipping stones on ibe surface
f the pond. Presently Mr. Monkey
bewail to in:it<xte>. them, and though hi*
Hones did not skip, lie threw them so
fust and made such luducrous imitations
of the positions and goslutcs of the
boys, that they screamed with laughter
and encouraged his piny.
Suddenly some one cried, " lie gets
his stones out of your pocket* Sain !
O. my eyes! they're your tnaibles!"
Too true ! Sam bud carelessly flung bis
overcoat on tlie fence, and Jocko, smelling
the ginger-Vend in the pockets,
had explored them all, discovered the
marbles, ami made rapid use of them.
Alas ! the beautiful Chinese ones, the
I gorgeous glass ones, the agates, the ali
fey*. the commoneys, were all deep in
the middle of the pond. Poor Sum !
he gave way, forgot his manliness, and
? oried as bitterly as Dora had over her
drowned dollies. Jocko received a
good whipping, and was chained up for
the night, wi.h nothing but dry bread
for b s supper. I
Poor Sam was some what consoled
the next morning; for kind Aunie gave
him fifteen cents out of her own pockei
money to buy new marbles. On the
strength of this, he forgave Jocko, and
feil him genernn-ly lecture he went to
school. 1 decided that the itmcbeviotis
creature must remain lied; hut Sam
t made such eloquent representations of
the hardiness of solitary confinement
in the wood-shed that I commuted the
sentence to a short tope under the
kitchen table.

the morning, I found Kiddy cutting up
fish for a chowder. She solemnly ioformed
me that the monkey watched
her so c'osely that she was getting
quite nervous. " 'Ihe wise like look of
the haste is sotnethin' awful, mnrm ; he
sees ivery turn of me iiaud, and it's all
of n creep I am, with his Middy watch
in' and niver spnkin', for it's my belafc
be cottld spako if he chose."
| ? 1 laughed at Iter, gave my directions
for dessert, and was leaving the room,
when she called my attention to the
cellar door. The latch was out of rr
der in some way, so that to keep thu
? door closed she was obliged to bolt it.
f 8he dropped her knife n? sho tnrncd to
bow me, but neglected to pick it up
till we had examined and diffused the
broken latch. Promising to ha\e it
mended! I wetit away, and she, stoop
I >!? ?* for the knife, noticed with relief?
as aha told me afterward?that Jocko
.had curled hirmoif up, and gor.e to
el^ep. Alas, poor Biddy I she little
knew that, while she was so volubly
explaining the state of the door, the
wily creature had not only uoticed that,
but hud Used the knife to cat his rope,
and was only waiting for a good oppor
lunity to make u*c of hi* liberty. Hi*
time toon came. Biddy wet) (down the
cellar, end her apparently sleeping one?nv
instantly started up, closed and
bolted the door upon her, and, with

quite regardless of the ecolJing of hi*

watched her putting the vmion* ingredients
into the chowder, he now t'eeid
to ?dd ? few of hi* own selection.?
With this in,flew, he pulled open the
table draw er, nnd finding "there n pleas
ing variety of objects, he proceeded by
:he aid of a cliair and a towel to reach
nnd remove the cover of the ksltle
without miming rus wu-Kod pawa, ami
with wonderful swiftness he llien added
the whole contents of tlie drawer to
poor Biddy's savory slew.
What his next achievement would
hare been we ran never know, for at
litis moment Roxy was heard coming
down stairs to re iron the white dresses
rudely treated the day before
Jocko dropped on the cover, towel and
all. and ran to hide himself behind ihe
floor barrel in the pantry, and Roxy
coming in saw nothing amisr ; but
poor Biddy's cries were distinctly audible,
and in great amazement she hastened
to open the door, and was ins:ant
lv ovet w he loud with hitter reproachos
from tho fniious prisoner, who, of
course, regarded nurse as the sole author
of the joke. It was only aficr the
exchange of a great many loud word*,
and the copious shedding of tears on
cook's part, thai they cante to an tinder
standing, and finally?missing Jocko?
to the right conclusion.
Of course he was 110 where to be
found, and peace was at Inst restored,
but not to continue long; /or Biddy
going to the closet, discovered the
dreadful *i<;ns of invasion there, and
set up a yell worth}- of a wake. R?>xy.
at the same moment, stooping over the
range for a flat iror. preceived an unaccountable,
ndnr, lifted the cover of the
chowder-kettle, and immediately sat
flat down upon the floor nttd gave way
to screams of di-may and Inughier.?
The noise of this duel reached even to
the nursery, and Bora and I hurried
down, expecting to find the house ot.
fire at least. O Max! If you could
oulv have been here I I have not
laughed so since we were children, and
that bottle of beer hurst, and blew ? ft
grand-father's wig. lb*xy still sftt on
tlio fl?>or, Inrne and weak with hysteri
cat laughing and crying, hut not quite
able to subdue either; Biddy with Iter
apron over her bond, alternately bewailed
" the poor dear doclhor'w dinner
spiled, and he niver in intrust in'," and
and threatened Jocko with every form
of violent death.
The stale of the pantry was nothing
compared to that chowder. There, all
Toiling and steaming together, were
slices of pork and rusty hairpins, fl ikes
of fbh and a ball of lamp wicking
rounds of potato, a half knilttd stock
ing. bits of onion, spools of cotton, and
a big lump of beeswax, a half eaten
apple, a pocket comb, and a fancy fan,
the" Key of Heaven" reduced to the
consistency of -the hard crAckers, a
lump of fl igroot, and two or three neckribbons
floating on top. Such a lime
ns we had fi-hing all these out ! But
you can imagine the test ? how 1 scold

them to preparing a new dinner?how
