" I think we can," he replied; "at all events,- we should make the effort at once, for we are at the ecd of the row." * Gen. Johnston," aid his friend, " your position as chief of this army and as the military commender of thin department demand* from you a frank statement of your views to the President. You beiiere that our cause is hopeless, and that further resistance, with the means at our command, would not only he use* le**, but unjustifiable, and that we should lay down our arm* and secure tba bent terms we can get for our people. I will, if you plea-e. state all this to the President, but I think you had better do so at once, and explicitly."? " Oen. Peauregard and I have been requested to meet the President this evening." lie replied," and I will give bim tny opinions very explicitly. You will not find me reticent upon them." At eight o'clock that evening the Cabinet, with the exception of Mr. Trenholm, whose illness prevented hi* attendance, joined the President at his room. It was a small apartment, some twelve by sixteen feet, containing a bed, a few chairs, and a table, with writing materials, on the second floor of the small dwelling of Mrs. John Taylor Wood ; and a few minutes after eight the two Generals entered. The uniform habit of President Pavis, in Cabinet meeting*, was to consume some little time in general conversation before entering upon the busi nesa of the occasion, not unfrequen'.iy introducing some anecdote or inte?e*ting episode, generally some reminiscence of the early life of himself or others in the army, the Mexican war. or his Washington experiences; and his manner of relating and his application to them were at all times very happy and pleasing. Few men seized more readily tipon the sprightly aspects of any transaction or turned tbem to better account; and liia powers of mimicry, whenever he condescended to exercise them, were ir resistible. Upon this occasion, at a time when the cause of the Confederacy was hopeless, when its soldiers were throwing away their arms and flving to their homes, when its Government, stripped of nearly all power, could not hope to exist ley on d a few days more, and when the enemy, more ~r..i -_j 1.? - I>?wenui it 11 u exunnni man ever, ws* advancing upon ail side*, (rue to hi* habit, ho introduced several subjects of conveisation, unconnected with the condition of the country, and di*ctt**ed them as if at tome pleasant ordinary meeting. After a brief time thus spent, turning to General Johnston, he aaid, in bis usual quiet, grave way, when en tering upon matters of business, " I hare requested you and General lJeanregard, General Johnston, to join u* this evening, that we might have the benefit of your views upon the situa tion of the conntry. Of course we f?el the mstrnitude of the moment.? Our late disasters are terrible; but 1 do not think we should regard them a* fatal. I think we can whip the enen.y yet if our people will turn out. We must look at mattera calmly, however, and see what is left for us to do. Whatever enn be done must be done at once. We have not a day to lose."? A pnn?e ensued, General Johnston not set-ming to deem himself expected to speak, when the 1'ieident said,'* We should like to hear yrur views. General Johnston." Upon this, the General, without preface or introduction?hi* words translating the expression which hi* face had worn since he entered the room?said, in his terse, concise, de j ! ... !/ * <'U?i rKi I?o way, *' *eeinng lO condense thought* ?h*? * e crowding for utterance," M) views nre, sir, that our people are tired of the war, feet them reive* whipped, and will not fight.? When he ceased speaking, whatever was thought of his statements?and their importance was fully understood?they elicited neither comment nor inquiry. The President, who, during their deliveiy, had sat with his eyes fixed upon a scrap of paper which be was folding and re?fold? ing abstractedly, and who had listened _ _i ^Mnom h cnangv ui pusuiun ur fxpreii' I ion, broke (lie silence by saying, in a iowveven ..lone: M What do you mt, General* Beauregard P "I concur in nil Genernl Johnston hns said," he re plied. Another silence, more eloquent of the full appreciation of the condi tion of the country than words could have been, succeeded, during which the President's manner was unchanged. After a brief pau*e, he said, without a variation of tone or expression, andj without raising his eyes from the slip of paper between his fingers: " Well, General Johnston, what do you propose f? You speak of obtaining terms. Yon know, of course, that the enemy refuses to treat with us. How do you propose to obtain terms P " I think the opposing Generals in the field may arrange them." * Do you think Sherman will treat with youT " 1 hare no reason to think otherwise. The member of the Cabinet, before referred to as conversing with lien. Johnston, and who was anxious that his views should be promptly carried out, immediately sealed himself at the writing table, and, taking up a pen. offered to act as the General's amaetten sis. At the request of the latter, how ever, the President dictated the letter to Gen. Slieiman. which was w ritten at once upon ? Imlf sheet of letter, folded as note p iper, and signed bv Gen. Johnston, who look it, and said lie would send it to Gen. Sherman early in the morning ; end in n few minuter the conference broke up. This note, which who h brief proportion for h run pension of hostilities, and a Conference with a view lo Agreeing upon terms of peace, has been pit! li-hed with othet letters which paired between the two Generals. On or about the ICth of April the President, his staff and Cabinet, left Greensboro to proceed still further South, wiih plans unformed, clinging to the hope it,at Johnston ami Slier* < man would secure peace and the quiet I of the country, but still all doubtful ofj the result, and still more doubtful as to consequences of failure.
