?ijr8??lwfflW t ot He eifcluslo^^Pmueh ,? ?fc\ H interesting In the early se'tU, , r. ment of this country. The tDtiqua k> of Europe have been diligently et , unraveling the historic signifi* ^ i- Ry. <lw?fW the lacustrine houses in the lakes of Switzerland and other plaee* on the Continent. Their investigation* . have been carried on to such a remark able extent that the discovery of a sins'* utensil or article of doioestie use has been sufficient to fix the prdbise age in which the persons lived who A made tise of it. That the remains of a race living 1 eyond the pale of hintbry have enabled men of science to determine their man* ner of living, what they nse for food, their daily habits, <fco. These revela* vions have enabled them to group these pre-historio races into various ages, such as the stone, bronze and iron.? The boundaries of these periods are as clearly defined as the pal?osic or otber ages of the geologist, and man is made to figure in these early limes with a true stow of his life and history as the animals of Ouvier from the discovery of a tooth or tDe bone of the foot. Those early racer, About which there Is eo much mystery, have, until very recently, been confounded with the savages who Inhxbited the country at the time of its discovery. There are donbttesa very few who really understand that the "mound builders"? the atrange race, whose colossal fortifications and burial places line the banks of the Ohio?were as distinct from ths red roan as the red man from the . whites. The traces of these mound builders are to bo seen everywhere throughout the West, from the Allegbanies to the Kocky Mountains.? ? Sometimes they were mere hillocks .marking the spot whore they were buried, but sometimes they are redoubts and breastworks, ramparts and circum vallations, so well preserved that we are able to make out protiv cloarly their means of attack and defence. In the early settlement of (he country, it was staled that a large burial place of these mound builders was to be found just below Clarksville, on the Indiana side of-the river. All traces of it were supposed to have been lost, but during the freshets of last spring and summer, the banks below Clarksville caved in to a remarkable extent.' The result was that the bones of the buried mound builders became exposed, and the vis itor could see, sticking in the bank, en tire skeletons in vaiious states of preservation. Hero wcro skulls as solid as the day they were buiied, with even the jagged suit urea intact, and nil their teeth grinning in ghastly solemnity at the passers by. Long bones protruded frotn the yielding sand, while the smaller onea lay toaltored around be neath the feet. Not only were we in the preaepe* of their worka but of the rrery men who were the builder*.? Among tHeee bonea, were battle axes, hatch eta and arrow-head*, uten-ila of pottery, peallea, roortara and article* uaed at ornament*. l>r. Neat, of this city, haa in hit poa*e*aion a vessel of pottery holding several gallons, w hich ta marked over with ornamental woik, and oertainly evinces considerable skill in the maker. A large uiortar wi'.h several holes, such as the medicine men of the monnd builders used, is in the possession of D'r. lteid. Battleaxes and tbe ordinary hatchets were found in large number*. Unlike (he mounds at Marietta and other places in Ohio, no metals or metallic substance* have yet been found. A few years ago, the corpse c( a warrior was discovered in one of the sepulchral mounds in the streets of Marietta, with the remains of a buckler " composed of copper overlaid with a thick plate of silver." The most ancient of the mounds have yielded bracelets of brass, emootb'and polhhed, rings and tubes of the same material, various ornaments for the person in silver, pipes of tcra cotta and slate, rude sculpture in wood, and other finer ones in more (hursble material. The nconle in the neighborhood have gathered op relics foun<) At the mound, and almost every fivhermnn posseees some trinket or utensil of pottery, axes or pestles. The pottery is ranch finer and harder than that in use with os, ungh zed, with mapy strange devices figured on the sides, while the edges are frequently scolloped. [New Albany Commercial, Oct. 23.
