C ?rrdly Swearing, There hi bold blasphemer* all round qi, We henr their oaths and itopreca lion* aa we walk the street* and drive along the highway.- Even little children swear like pirate*. Sometime* the very air teems close, hot and st'fling as if Riled w ills exhalation* from tlic pit*, and we tremble lest Ood should send sudden and awful judgment upon those who recklessly take his name in vain. Profanity so'foolish as well as wicked, and it has been well said, " The swearer needs no bail?the devil gets him to bite the naked book." Some vices we can almost excuse, because of temptation by which the perpetrator is assailed, but the profane man has no efcouse. Iff* vile habits gratifies net an appetite or lust. It is practiced front pure love of evil, it shows a dark and malignant hatred of God, and has only one redeeming feature, viz: its bold ne*s. The open blasphemer defies Jehovah to his face. He dares the omnipotent One to damn him. Hut there is a kind of swearing that is just as wicked as this, and a great deal meatier. It is that of those who use the current Lilliputian oaths.? "Who, not bold enough to say " damn," soften it lo " darn," and 6eeni to think that God will give tbero great credit for tbeir politeness. We cannot pollute our columns with a list of these common expressions which are employ *d by those who are wicked enough hut too eowardly to swear " right out." Nor is it necessary, fur our readers are peoutiarly fortunate in their neighbors if they are not hearing them every day. "What we wish to call attention to is Ihie?that all these little oaths are only the great ones slightly changed? they mean the same thing?they are just as profane aod blasphemous, and the only difference is that while Satan has made those for bold sinners, he has made these for titnid and cowardly MM. Wo have been told thai some professors of religion are in the habit of Using these sugar coated poisons, these blasphemies and imprecations with the rough edges trimmed off. If so, they have probably considered the true nature of such expressions. We hope they will not be guilty any longer of Conduct so cowardly and disgraceful; but either begin tu swear out right, ro that every body can seo to whose party they'belong, and the church can excommunicate them, or q\iit swearing , altogether. A man who is telling the truth, and * is not in as much passion about it, ha* 110 temptntion to swear. Unless he has formed a habit of using profane language be will never think of it. A plain and straight forward statement will satisfy him, however important the matter, or how great his interest in it. But as the Christian has no right even to tell a lie, or to get into a passion, he has no more business to swear, even in * * * ? 11 t tut) Jjilltpuiian nnu oowniaiy wnv, mnn nn angel has. We ought uot to indulge in any habit that we know would be out of place in our future home, for this life is given to us as a time of pi operation for tiiO life to come, Wnaif Mr. Barnum instituted his famous prize baby-show be was thought to hare stalled a novel and original idea. But it seems be only followed an illustrious example, slightly modified and enlarged to suit the circumstances. Queen Victoria has long.it appears, been prompted by her motherly heart to bestow a pecuniary prize upon such of her servants as are blessed by bountiful nature with especial fruilfuinesa in childbearing. The amount of this royal offering is duly proportioned to the fecundity displayed, at the rate of one pound per baby ac cording to the last instance, which is thus reported in an English paper! " The Queen has sent her usual bounty of three pounds to the wife of Andrew Cassefs, ploughman at Balfark, on the Balblrpie estate, who the other day had three daughters at a birth." -The good Queen is, perhaps, unconsciously a sharer in the opinions of the first Napoleon, who was wont to say that the greatest woman in Franc* was she a bo had borne the moat children. The charily, however, is a worthy oji*, and cieditable to the maternal sympathies of her Majesty, A COIW of Philip oi Meoedna is eft exhibition in Washington.
