MEDICINE AND SURGERY.
THB Phlidii|iW University of MedIclne
nn?i 8nrgery was organized, in 1948.?
Chartered by the I.egislatur*, Ftbrury M,
1843. Memo changed by a legislative enactment
to (ha Eclectic Medical College of Philadelphia
ia 1M4. In 14U, it purchased the
Pennsylvania Medical College. established in
IMS, and the Philadelphia Medical College,
which had previoucly been merged into the
Pennjylvaaia Medical College. In If04 it
purchased the Wnn Medical University. The
Trustee* of the separate schools united, petitioned,
and obtained a special not of tho Legislature,
consolidating these Institutions and
changing tholr nsiuc- to that of the Pulladelphia
University of Medicine and Surgery,
March 14, 1804. All thee* various acts are
published in the statutes ot Pennsylvania.?
The cost of the building aud museum was over
one hundred thousand dollars. It will he
observed that tb* University, as now organised,
is the legal representative o{ the four medical
colleges that it has absorbed. It is a libera.
tlhcc! of medicine, confined to no dogma,
nor attached to any medical clique; but embraces
In its teachings everything of valuo to
tho profession.
Stnifins.?It has two full sessions oaeh yoar,
commencing on tho 1st of October, and continuing
until tho 1st of January as its first
session, and from the 1st of January to the
1st of April as its second ; the two constituting
one fall course of lectures. It has also a
summer session, commencing the 1st of April
and eontinuiMr until Auirust. for the nrrnnn.
torjr branches, such as Latin, Greek, Mathematics,
Botany, Zoology, Chemistry, Anatomy,
Phy aiolngy, etc.
Tiekete.?Tickets to the full conrse of lectures
$120, or $00 for each session. For the
summer or preparatory course $25. Graduating
fee $30. To aid yossj men nf Moderate
menne, the University has issued Are hundred {
trholar?hi/>?, which are sold to first-course students,
for $75, and to second-course students
and clergymen for $30, each constituting the
holder a file member, with the perpetual prir- 1
ileges of tho lectures, and all the teachings of i
tho school. The only additional fees are a
yearly dissecting and matriculating ticket, j
such of which is $6. ,
The Advantage* of Srhoiarehipe.?The stu- (
dent holding a scholarship can enter the Col- t
lege at any time during the year, attend an
long as ho chooses, and re enter tho institu*tion
as frequently as desired.
It require* no previous reading or study to
enter the University on scholarships, hence,
sH private tuition foes are saved.
Students, by holding scholarships, e|M>ro*esuto
other business a part of the time.^^
The candidate for graduation can present
himself at any time, and receive his degree as
soou as qualified.
In ease a student should hold a scholarship
and not be able to attend lectures, it eau be
transferred to another, thus preventing any
less. i
Parents, guardians, or friends of students
wishing to purchase scholarships for them a
year or more before their atten<!?nee at the
University, can secure them by advancing one- 1
half the price, and paying the balance when
the student enters. Physicians and benevo- ]
lent men ean bestow great benefit upon poor (
young men, hy presenting them a sholarsbip, ,
and thus enabling thou, to obtain an honor*- {
ble profession.
The Faculty embraces seventeen eminent ,
physicians and surgeons. The Univerity has
associated with it a large hospital clinic, wbere
every form of medicnl and surgical disease is 1
operated on and treated in tue presence of tho I
class. \
Coi.i.kgk Building.?The College building, 1
located in Ninth Btrect, south of Walfiht, is i
the finest in tlienitv. Its front is snlUirii I .
gotbic, and ia adorned with embattl^inenta ,
and embrasures, prcaenting a novel, bold, and |
beautiful appearance. The facade ia of brown j
