U made caricatures of wothe proper quarter to obtain rccogui m, !i?n^ The abort gored dress lias all tbo ad L wantttOfP* nf ltrr> tllormipr nn.l mnm tviili out any of its disadvantages. It is pretty, neat, convenient, modest and inexpensive. It provides a costume in which ladies can walk, ride or travel all the year rouud,. with as much ease as gentlemen can in their comfortable cloth suits. 13ut it must be mndo well and tastefully of material suited to the style, and of a quality that will eland wear and exposure without injury. The prettiest short drosses we have seen are cut out in squares over the 1 pleating of tho petticoat, or over a wide] flat pleatiug that stimulates a petticoat. The edge is always bound with colored braid'or edged with heavy jet braid. Anolhor stylo has a plain edge laid j ovor tho pleating with vandykos or scollops stimulated by narrow lines of jet, chenille cord or silk braid, buttons to match.the'trimming occupying the spaces. Some Short drosses nro made with a double vandyked odge, tho upper points J finished with tassels. This will do for | little girls, but ft is altogether too fan- i ciful for adults, and especially for; a street dress, which should be! plain and unobtrusive. In arranging a skirt of ttiis kind care must bo taken to have the points from which tho tassels are suspended, placed between t'10 low or ones. I stiff lining between tho ma \ terial and the facing is necessary to keep ' the points smooth and in place. Hands j of velvet or braid of graduated width I are sometimes put' uj?or. the petticoat instead of tho pleating, and have the j advantago of being newer; they also' look very well, but wo prefer the pleating, so far as appearauce is concerned, j Only self colors, very rarrow stripes} or small figures should be used indie composition of a short dross, largo designs of any kind, whether plaid, suipol or set figure being manifestly out ? f place. The costume should also be 17011 oral ly made en suite, or as nearly so as pos ' sible. The short saenno col out or trimmed to match the ski:t, will be the garment generally worn with abort dresses during the rpring ecn-on, and will be very approptiato for mildur skies and a less rigorous state of the ntmosphere. Over such a toilette a waterproof cloak may bo thrown us nccWou demands it, completely shielding it Irom possible injury. Never wear a wide cloalc"or a shawl with a short dross, either one looks ah eurdly out of harmony with the close, compact character of the general design and spoils its effect. It i> much bettoi to have one neat, complete suit than a dozen incongruous at tides of dress. Cor. Ckurfc&tun Mercury. A uttle romance lias recently enliv fined the monotony of country life in Hampshire, England, One of the old Baronies is claimed bv an Australian adventurer, whose life has not inn smoothly, And who is ill prepared to grace the station which is supposed to belong to him by right. Ono of tbe most hopeful means of accomplishing tbis is through the establishment of cotton factories, for tbe purpose of manufacturing into goods the staple that is raised tbero and in tbe adjacent regions. It appears by statistics furnished us that there has been of late an in-crease in the number of Carolina cotton factories, and the capacity of these already in existence lias been greatly enlarged, many having doubled, andsome Quadrupled, the number of their spindles.
