It ia stated (hat Mr. John Fowler, of
Leeds, England, in 1830, introduced his
patent steam ploughs. Stoel ropes are
employed for the moving of the ploughs,
while the engines are stationary, or only
moving, along the headlands of the
fields. Several hundred sets are said to
be in operation in England and also in
the Nile Valley of Egypt. sT

Tnn trial of the negro Horace Orceley
for the murder of R. S. Rhett, Esq.,
last Julv, began on Friday last,
in Charleston. It is the first capital
case tried here under the new criminal
code. The Court assigned U. S. Senator
Campbell and other eminent counsel
to defend the prisoner. The evi
dence for the prosecution is chiefly by
negroes, and conclusive of the prison?
er's guilt. The trial excited much interest,
the court room being densely
crowded. Horace was convicted of
murder, but his alleged ncc< mplice was
acquired. Under the provisions! f the
new code, the prisoner made a statement
on the witness stand.?J'hanix.

baa acquired a self-constituted rep-,

are not at ail satisfied that the
good people of tbat State will feel flattered
by the too willing labors of Mr.
Ward, of Now York, who finds that the
vast interests of the Empire State are
insufficient for his expansive benevolence.
Lie undertook on Monday to
speak for " tbe loyal men*'of Maryland,
and rather uncourteou>-ly declined to
bear Col. Phelps, who bravely fought
for the Union in the late war, and, one
would think, having been handsomely
sustained by his fellow citizens, was entitled
to speak for them. But Mr. Ward,
like too many of our radical friends,
farcies that he knows what people need
better than they know themselves.- We
believe tbat the people have managed
their own afiai?s pretty successfully
without Mr. Ward's aid, and we suspect
that they can dispense with it to the
end of time. At least they arfe enough
of freemen toprefer that, in that as in
other things, tbev shall bo permitted to
exercise their own discretion.

applied to a lawyer to institute legal

took charge of the case, making it
a coition that, in case of success, the
