Stoel ropes are employed for the moving of the ploughs, while the engines are stationary, or only moving, along the headlands of the fields. Tnn trial of the negro Horace Orceley for the murder of R. S. Rhett, Esq., last Julv, began on Friday last, in Charleston. It is the first capital case tried here under the new criminal code. The Court assigned U. S. Senator Campbell and other eminent counsel to defend the prisoner. The evi dence for the prosecution is chiefly by negroes, and conclusive of the prison? er's guilt. The trial excited much interest, the court room being densely crowded. Horace was convicted of murder, but his alleged ncc< mplice was acquired. Under the provisions! f the new code, the prisoner made a statement on the witness stand.?J'hanix.
