Tiie member* of the South here are up to the
temper of the occasion. Most of the Southern
members of the American |mrt v stand straight
up to the issue of disunion. They see that issue
coming, and they are preparing for union with
lha resistance men of the South. But for a few
manosu vering men among them, they would already
have gt*en UP their organisation and voted
for Mr. Bocook. It ia however, only a question
of days with them, for the South is forcing her
men into solid column. Ail the intelligence that
reaches here shows that tite Southern members
are behind the people. The people of the South

The election of Sherman will be regarded as
the triumph of Seward, and the avant courier of
the success of Seward in 1860 Is the South ready
to allow the power of the Government to be
wielded for her subjugation, and to promote a
war of races! Is she ready to subject herself to
the scythe of aiiolUionism, and to droop under
the blight of n pro consular despotism! If not,
she must prepare.
"Ost Wiped Oct."?A friend of ours received
a letter recently from a friend of his in Texas, in
which was contained an account of an occurrence
that took place a fortnight ago, and which resulted
in the death of an abolitionist* name unknown.
It seems from the statement that Isaac
Adair, who moved from Spartanburg some years
lNick, nnd a man of property, was informed by
bis negro* that the abolitionist above spoken of,
was endeavoring to entice them off to a free
State. Mr. Adnir, it appears, told them to ac
ecpt bis proposition ; and then inform him at
what time they would leave, and bv what place
I hey would pass. They did so. In the meantime
Mr. Adair innde known the facts to several
of his neighbors, nnd they repaired to the spot,
armed with double barreled shot guns. When
the abolitionist arrived at the place designated,
seeing men, he became suspicious, and endeavor
ed to wenpr, whoa Mr. Adair and his friends firing
on him, killed him on the spot.

The ** Helper Boole" In
of Honi J. D. Ashirore.
A voluminous discussion, in which mnch feeling
has been manifested, has arisen in Congress,
since its convention, In regard to this vile production
and its Indorscrs, some fifty-odd members
of that body, it is alleged, having indorsed
it The book, it has become notorious, is one
containing sentiments and plana of a most infamous
and outrageous character. The sentiments
nre, doubtless, those of a sectional party,
who, by its avowed purposes and continual aggressions,
is making Itself (nay, has already done
so) extremely odious and detestable to nil good
men, and moio particularly to Southerners. The
plans, which it lays down, nre for as mens a purpose
as the heart can conceive of. But w? do
not propose to speak of the book and its contents,
more than for an Introduction. On Wednesday,
the 14lh inst., in the House, while Mr. ValLAXDicnAM,
of Ohio, had the floor, and was read
ing some extracts from it, to prove Its character
together with some extract* from a circular he
had received, and which he said had been extensively
circulated, our Immediate Hepri-wntitire,
lion. J. D. Asiimorb, Asked and obtained the
floor, to make a statement. We coj>y it from the
Congressional Globe :
Mr Asuuott: Mr. Clerk, to show that the

at this very moment, carrying out a part of that

are at this work in South Cnrolien, and that
we have now in jail,at the court house at Greenville,

Mr. AftnMoiiK. Yes, sir; they will hang him,

most conservative and Union-loving district of
South Carolina, and I have myself l?een taunted
with suhmissionism in my native State and with
being too much a Union man ; since I hove taken
my seat ii|m>ii this floor, such has been the work
of these vile emissaries in South Carolina. I am
glad of an oportunity to state the fact without
intending to engage in discussion. Only a few
days since this emissary of these Black Republicans,
llarrold Wyllls, was at his work wnen tl
was announced to some of the lending gentlemen
of that tfSreenvilie) district that such a mischievous
and infamous attempt was being made to
arouse the slave population of the district and
array the non-slaveholder against the slaveholder;
they immediately went to work and ferreted
out in a single day seven copies of that
infamous Helper book?the work of an infamous I

and he had a placard over his mantle piece setting

and free of cosh by applying nt the office of the

about liia work aeerelly and at the midnight

let me tell gentlemen on the Republican aide of
the House, that the men who cmnc forward aud
announced that this mischievous work was going
on were non-slaveholder*. A good old gentleman,
whom I have known from mv infancy,
and who never owned n slave in his life, was the
first to announce the rascally treason attempted
to be perpetrated. [Applause in the galleries.! '
The man, Wyllla, was immediately seized, and
the results which I have stated followed; and,
sir, he ha* mude revelations which I am not
yet prepared to make upon this Hour, and which,
when the time come*, 1 will make and fortify
with the testimony of the best men In the good
old district of flreenville?the Union district of
South Carolina. This is the work that these
gentlcnitii have betn recommending ami that
as Wen going on, on the part of emissaries of
those who indorsed the Helper hook.
1 Mi<t, Mr. Clerk, that 1 ?li?l not intend to engage
in nny discussion. I merely wished to state
the facts, and it struck me that it was a good opportunitv
to do so when my friend from Ohio
was reading the shameless and infamous pnssa

circular kindred in its character. [Applause.]
