I have live*! long enough to be rarely mis taken, And borne my full share of life'* changea* ble scene*, But my mom have been ?oJaoed by good greens and bacon. 'And mv joy* bare been doubled by bacon and greens. t " What a thrill of remembrance e'en now they awaken. Of childhood's gny morning and youth's merry scenes, When one day we had greens and a plate full of bacon, And the next we bad bacon and a plate full of greens. Ah, well I remember when sad and forsaken. Ueart-wrung by the scorn of a miss in her teens. How I rushed from her sight to my loved rrnMtni an?l hnmn And forgot my despair over bacon and greens. - t When the banks refused specie and credit was shaken, I shared in the wreck and was ruined in means. My friends all declared I had not "saved my bacon," Bat I lived?for I still had my bacon and greens. m t i ' Oh, there is a charm in this dish rightly taken, ? That from custards and jellies an epicure weana? Stick your fork in the fat?wrap your greens round the bacon, And you'll vow there is nothing like bacon an<^ greens. If some fairy a grant of three wishes would ?;make one So worthless as I?and so laden with sins. I'd wish all the greens in the world?then the bacon? And then w ish for a little more bacon and i g?eens. POSTSCRIPT. I return to confess that for once I'm mi.sta ken, As much as I've known of this world and its scenes. There's one thing that's equal to both greens 1 L ana oacon, And That in a dish of good bacon and green#. liUMOBIST'S OLIO. 44 Wall, Jefferson, I guess you are tolerable late 'nor you used to was,'' said an engine, driver on a Yankee railway, who had been waiting at a junction a good while for the train that had just arrived under the charge of Jefferson. " Wall," replied Jefferson, wiping bis perspiring face with a handful ?>t cotton waste, 44 I reckon we are behind a considerable scarce, but thai don't raise me, no how ; it's getting along here uuv time astonishes mo a several?it does." 4* Been a smash ?" inquired the first speaker, chewing slowly. 141 expect not," returned Jefferson, 44 but well nig', one. . Why yc see nnrov flnll*n if ?'!K rlui-nod linf irai-u and the rails was all expanding so much that the way was nut only drawn out dreadlul, but, what was worse, had not room to stretch quite, and was all so raised and humped up, it's just been as worse As if I had come the whole entire road over two tall rows ol* tarnation camels' hacks!" 44 Wall, I calc'late that was '1103'ing a few," returned the listener, 4k but one day bringing up my engine it was hot! I reckon the-rails was teverish a chalk or two that time! I put full steam up, shut safety valves, slacked brake on, right away, and we walked ahead ! we did. But only just in time, for we looked back and saw the rails crawling about like live snakes, and running over the banks to cool themselves in the water 1" Jefferson went off to oil his engine. Susceptible Landlord.?44 I'll let you the house," said a landlord, somewhat. advanced in years, and a widower, to a gentleman, a few days since, 44 on one condition." 44 What may that be 1" 44 That you will never allow your wife to ask me for repairs "? 44 Very singular request, sir." "That may be?but 1 k,pow I have let honses for twenty years?and I know." 44But for what reason do you ask this condition ?" " I can never get away from these women-folks without doing all they wish. Why, sir, I let a little house to a widow lady, and one day she met me, and said : 44 Mr. , , iny sink wants painting, and I think it would be economy for yon to have it i done." 441 thought so too, and I sent a < fainter. What do yon think! before ; got ont of the honse, she had so coaxed me with reasons and entreaties, that I gave an order to paint the honse, , trom top to bottom. At the head of it was a large ma* mire cart, moving along very slowly, and making no offer to turn out for the procession. 3 Yankee was astonished at this want of attention on the part ot the driver of said cart, and turning to a Philadelphian, who was standing by, he remarked: 44 I guess the folks aint very nerlite abeout here; tu hum, where 1 live, they alwavs turn out for a funeral." 44 Oh, that's part of the pixniession," remarked the Philadelphia", gravely. \ 44 Du tell? You don't say so?? Heow?" exclaimed the astonished Yankee. 44 Whv, you see, it is a very poor sandy soil about hero, and notning comes op they plant, unless they manure it well, bo when they bury a fellow, they throw a whole cartload in the grave, to make him rise at judgment day ! The Yankee mizzled. i " At a social party in Cincinnati," ( writes a genial friend, ua young law- ( ver observed a young lady approach- ( ing whom he bad had the misfortune j to offend. He extended his hand and , and exclaimed, "Goodevening, Mary." " Miss Mary, if you please," said the young ladv, bridling up at his familiarity. " We can miss you, Mary, only when yon are absent," he replied, and they were soon reconciled. It is said ? she will soon be missed no more. A Stoby on the Back of a Bank Note.?One of our dealers in clothing exhibited,to us, on Saturday last, a five dollar note on the York Count}' Bank, on the hack of which was written, in a plain, nico hand, the following: r " This is the last of a ver}* large for tunc left to me by my worthy and respected uncle, who, unfortunately, N broke his neck by a fall from a scaffold erected by the sheriff of Blair county." \Easton Express. \ Kandolth says that once upon a time < a colored cook expected company of her own kind and was at a loss how to entertain her friends. It was at a time 1 of the year when eggs were scarce and ( butter high, and the colored folks gen-1, erally at the expense of " extras " for , their own company. Whereupon her | mistress told Chloe she must make an 1 apology. 'Good Lord! missus, how can I make itf I got no eggs, no butter, nor nothing to make it with." ' An old rough Puritan minister once ' took for his text that passage in the Peal iris, " I said in my haste all men are liars " Looking up apparently as if ho saw ' the Psalmist standing immediately be ' tore him he went on thus: " You said in your ha^te, David, did , ye ? Well, if ve had been here, ye i might have said it alter mature rcflec * tion." ' An old lady was asked what she 1 th 'light of one of her neighbors of the name of Jones, and, with a knowing look, replied, " Why, I don't like to say anything abont my neighlxirs; but as t? Mr. J opes, sometimes I think, and t then again I don't know ; but, after all, < I guess he'll turn out to l>e a good deal such a sort of a man as 1 take him lo ' he!" . A sharper, who had lost his hat, going out of a theatre in the middle of a crowd, snatched a man's hat front oft' bis head. The poor fellow, finding his hat gone, cried, " Tney have stolen my | hat." The sharper, immediately put- 1 ting the hat on his head, and covering 1 it with both hands, exclaimed, " Have they ? I defy them to take mine 1" A Speech Impromptu.?At the close of a teachers' institute down east, the principal of the academy in M. being requested to make a few remarks, rose and spoke as follows: "Ladies and gentlemen? In the language of?(hesitating)?I forgot what his name was*? (still hesitating)?and also what he said!" A Western editor thus sums up the peculiarities of a cotemporarv : " He is too lazy to earn a mtaf and too mean to eat one. He never was generous but once, and that was when he gave the itch to an apprentice boy.* A witness was called to the stand to give in his testimony. A man referring to the sudden death >f a relative, was asked if he lived high. " Well, I can't say he did,"said lie, " but he died high. He was suspended." A Hottentot got up a painting of heaven.
