About thirteen years ago, (say* tho Nashville Parlor Visitor, ot July, 1354,) wnen trio now nourishing city crt Hannibal, on tlie Mississippi rivor, was bnt a few huts belonging to some hardy "squatter," and such a thing as a steamboat was considered quite a sight, the f jllowiug incident occurred: > A tall brawny woodsman stood leaning against a tree which stood upon the bank of the river, looking at 601110 approaching object, which our readers would havo easily discovered to have been a steamboat. About half ah hour elapsed, and the boat was moored, and the hands were engaged in taking on wood. Now, among the many passengers on this boat, both male and female, was a spruce young dandy, with a killing mouBlache, &c., who seemed bent 011 making an impression 011 the hcarts.oi the young ladies on board, and to that end he must perforin some heroic deed. Observing our squatter friend, he imagined this to be a fine opportunity to bring himself into notice?so, stepping into the cabin, he said : " Ladies, it yon want.to enjoy a good laugh, step out 011 the guards. I intend to frighten that gentleman into fits \ybo stands on the bank." XUe ladies complied with the request, and our dandy drew from his bosom a formidable bowie-knife and thrust it into his belt; then taking a largo horsepistol in each hand, lie seemed satisfied that all was right. Thus equipped, he strode on with an air which seemed to say : " The hopes of a nation depends 011 me." Marching np to the woodsman, he exclaimed: "Jfonnd you at last, have I? You are the man I've been looking for these threo weeks 1 Say your prayers 1" he continued, presenting his pistols; "you will make a capital barn door, and I'll drill the key-hole myself I" The squatter calmly surveyed him a moment, then drawing back a stop he planted his huge fist directly between . .the eyes of bis antagonist, who in a moment was floundering in the turbid waters of the Mississiphi. Every passenger by this time collected on the guards, and the shout that now went up from the crowd speedily restored the Crestfallen hero to his senses, and, as he was sneaking oft* towards the boat, was accosted by his conqueror: "I say, VOU, next timo you come around drilliu' key-holes, don't forget yer old acquaintances 1" The Jadies unanimously voted the knife and pistols to the victor. .. - - - ? 8ato old Mrs. Philanthropy the other day, acc<osting a precocious urchin ; in tho street with a wardrobe remark- i able for its ventilating advantages, H Dubby, why don't you go home i and have your mother sew up that hole < in your trowsers ?" "O, you git eaut, old 'omau," was tho respectful re^ly, "our folks is 6C-> < nouiiziug, and a nole will last longer 1 . .than a patch any day." Tho old lady's honest sympathy was j wasted, while yonnujiier beat a retreat round the corner, displaying a flag of true* fa the rear. - ? V Diu^ court week's orriv'." This last remark of the disciplo of Blackstono was given in that peculiar fearful whisper, indicative of the suddcnlv checked And temporarily subdued angor and mortification?Anger at the iinpcrturbation and knavery of the witness, and mortification at his to- ] tal failuro to elicit anything beneficial to his client. lie still continues to aver, with many emphatic expletives, that Brown is the scoundrel alive, and hasn't sense enough to answer a plain question correclly. Honorable Conditions Many years ago, in what is now a nourishing city m this State, lived a stalwart blacksmith, fond of his pipe and his joke. lie was also fond of his blooming daughter, whose many grnccs and charms bad ensnared the affections of a susceptible young printer. The couple, after a season of mutual billing and cooing, "engaged" themselves, and nothing but the consent of the young lady's paricnt" prevented iheir union. To obtain this an interview was arranged, and typo prepared a little speech to astonish and convince tho old gentlonmn, whosat, enjoying bis favorite pipe, in perfect content. Typo dilated upon tlic fact of their long friendship, their mutual attachment, their hopes for tho future, and like topics, and, taking the daughter by tho hand, said : ' I now, sir, ask your permission to transplant this lovely flower from its parent bed "?but his "phelinks" over- ! came him, he forgot the remainder of i his rhetorical flourish, blushed, stammered, and finally wound up with, * from its parent bod into my own."
